Did you know that Seagrass beds are also important for determining water quality and the overall health of an ecosystem?
Seagrass traps fine sediment and particles that are suspended. The leaves slow water flow, which allows more sediment to settle to the bottom. As a result, the clarity of the water increases, which allows more light to penetrate. This light promotes growth of seagrasses, which improves oxygen levels in the water.

Forest Ecosytems play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. They are amongst the most important things humankind must invest in if we want to come close to our 1.5° goal. While current science leaves no doubt that we rely on ecosystem services of (old grown) forest some people around the world consider it a good idea to cut them down. I can't even say how sad and angry this stupidity makes me..

🌲We Are The Forest🌲Last week, we began a journey with over 100 ninth graders from Ypsilanti STEM Academy. Over the next few months, we will work to develop a 🌳Nature based, systems thinking lens.🌳These students will train for the green tech jobs of tomorrow by solving community problems with #ecosystemservices #biomimicry and #greeninfrastructure 🌅The future belongs to those that can work and solve problems WITH #nature 🌲❤️ #wearetheforest #greentech #greenjobs #trees #forest #placebasededucation #stem #citizenscience #ypsilanti #ypsireal #ypsiarborstudentforestproject

The North Pole.
At first sight there is not much life in the vast expanse covered by snow and ice, with the exception of the occasional polar bear.
Under the ice cold tolerant single cell microbes dominate the ecosystem. The microbes provide nutrients for crustaceans and fish under the ice, and indirectly also to the mammals and birds above.
Due to climate change the last decades have seen the largest loss of ice cover since the last 800, 000 years. In approximately 30 years the pole will be clear of ice during summers.
The pictures are from a project where researchers from @deepsthlmuni and others are investigating how the loss of ice will affect microbial species composition and metabolic functions.

Notes: Learning about managing Red Alder on a family forest tree farm today. These trees are about 15 years old and have already received one pre commercial thinning. Red alder is often known as a weed and landowners/foresters have historically spent a lot of energy to get rid of these for more favorable Douglas-fir, but it is actually a very valuable tree ecologically, culturally, and economically. It is a pioneer species, meaning that it is one of the first trees to establish itself in a new site and must have full sun. It paves the way for conifers (evergreen trees) by enriching the soil by adding back nitrogen and duff from decomposing leaves. It is a relatively short lived tree, too, so it is ideal for managing for short rotation timber and prepping soil for trees like Sitka spruce and Douglas-fir. #hardwood #alder #nature #pacificnorthwest #forest #forestry #rurallife #ecology #ecosystemservices

ALUS WUQWATR participants Murray and Warren Wild have had great success with their native seed mixes, including this purple prairie clover (Dalea purpurea), a native species that helps boost biodiversity. #ecosystemservices #saskatchewan

Since 2017, ALUS WUQWATR participants Murray and Warren Wild have planted 30 acres of native grasses and forages, following a creek that meanders across their land. They also enhanced 3 acres of wetlands and 3 acres of riparian buffer zones by stabilizing stream banks and seeding salt-tolerant grass species to help reduce the salinity of the land. #ecosystemservices #saskatchewan

Hawksbill turtles are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List with factors such as habitat loss, entanglement and erosion of nesting beaches leading to their decline. They also continue to be poached, despite contributing to climate change resilience in the coastal communities from where the poachers often come. They build resilience and storm protection in coastal areas by feeding on sponges, which otherwise compete with hard corals for space and reduce the capacity of coral reefs to attenuate wave energy. In this way alone they are extremely valuable, let alone as a tourism highlight for many scuba divers, snorkellers and beach-goers. sevenseas_media #hawksbill #turtle #worthmorealive #climatechange #coralreef #ecosystemservices #ecology #turtles #iliketurtles #conservation #awareness #education #underwaterphotography #scubadiving #marineconservation #naturephotography #nature #biodiversity #ocean #oceanoptimism #conservationoptimism #planetocean

Whales may not be what comes to mind when thinking about rewilding Britain, but they have huge benefits for ecosystems and all of humanity.

Commercial whaling and overfishing has lead to horrifically reduced numbers of whales. Current numbers are thought to be as low as 1% of their natural levels. But whales could be a huge help in our fight against climate change. Through their poo!

By fertilising the water with iron-rich whale poo they cause an increase in plankton numbers, which sink to the seafloor, removing CO2 from the atmosphere. It's thought that the sperm whales in the Southern Ocean alone fix as much as 400,000 tonnes of carbon this way each year!
