We haven’t had biting mosquitoes here at the #kingslandbasin before this summer. Is it the heat? I’m always terrified I’ll find an Asian zebra one but luckily this one isn’t one of those! We need more fish, swifts and bats to eat the larvae and adults 🐟🦇 We listened to the bats arrive tonight on the new @echometertouch from @wildlifeacoustics - what a great new gadget? They arrived at 8.48pm on the dot! #mosquito #bites #allergy #kingslandbasin #regentscanal #water #ecosystemservices #bats #commonpipistrelle #hackney

“My appreciation of nature started early on through hunting,” says ALUS WUQWATR participant Terry Mearns. “Now, with ALUS, I have the chance to give back to nature and wildlife.” Today, ducks, geese, beavers, white-tail deer and even northern leopard frogs are at home on this ALUS project, while many insects, including bumblebees and countless blue damselflies make the picturesque scene quite literally abuzz with activity. ALUS WUQWTR participants Terry and Lynda Mearns are banking on the ability of the natural landscape, enhanced through ALUS, to retain water during heavy rainfall, and therefore to significantly reduce the risk of damage to neighbouring communities in the future, while also producing many other ecosystem services for the benefit of all. Before and after: In 2011, extreme rains caused major flooding near Silton, Saskatchewan, and washed out a natural dam on the property of local residents Terry and Lynda Mearns. With ALUS WUQWATR’s help, they not only reconstructed the dam, but also restored their 16-acre wetland. Read more: https://alus.ca/alus_news_and_events/flood-proofing/ #ecosystemservices @WUQWATR

Through their ALUS projects, WUQWATR participants Terry and Lynda Mearns are helping to improve water quality for their community, upstream of Last Mountain Lake. Read more: https://alus.ca/alus_news_and_events/flood-proofing/ #ecosystemservices #WUQWATR

So many moving parts around here. A devastating storm in our community, other folks’ big plans canceled, little irritations like getting stung in the eye by a wasp… But the sweet news is the little turks are out on pasture! And thus begins a cycle of fertility and renewal for our orchard. A little animal love to lighten all these heavy loads.
Thank you @ljscherer13 for the 📷

This week has been so up and down with uni work. Unexpected applications, running classes, tutoring and writing my confirmation document for my PhD has me wanting a little break!! Which is kiiiiind of what I’m doing next week!? I’m gearing up for a week in the field to start collecting some data on ecosystem services around Weipa, northern QLD. I’m thinking about starting a blog to document some of my work soon.... or possibly a YouTube channel? Will keep you all updated on my travels next week. Hope you’ve had a lovely week 🌿💫 #thecommonground #phd #research #ecosystemservices

Last weekend I had the fortune to be invited to the ejido "El Durazno" for a #workshop to estructurate an internal regulation. Even I ended up participating a little bit xD with the activities to help ejidatarios (people who lives and benefit from the ejido) to identify their local natural resources.

This because the ejido is inside of the Sierra Gorda of Guanajuato's Biosphere Reserve (#RBSGG) and now is going to be benefited with a Pay for Environmental Services, so they have to follow certain rules to be sure their productive and daily activities don't cause environmental degradation. •

It is important to note that people need continuous advice and dialogue with specialist and between the members of their community too, in order to decide the best "behavior code" for all the inhabitants. Sometimes, results of working this things can be seen 3 years after the first workshop.

“The knowledge about seagrass is low amongst the public and decision makers, and this ecosystem remains ignored on conservation agendas,” according to Benjamin Jones.
.
Benjamin just started as a PhD student at #deepsthlmuni and is director and co-founder of Project Seagrass, a UK-based environmental charity dedicated to advancing the conservation of seagrass through education, influence, research and action.
.
Not only are seagrasses crucial to food security and alleviating poverty, they serve as nursery grounds for many species of commercially important fish and shellfishes, protect shorelines, are an essential food source for dugongs, green turtles and manatees, and provide natural protection against climate change. .

If I can’t have sunshine on a cloudy, rainy day, I’ll take a reminder of the pollinators hard at work in my garden.

Red Devil Apples. All looking devilishly yummy!
A mid-season apple harvested in September. With contrasting white flesh beneath, the red skin colouration brings a pinkish tinge to juicing. Can also be eaten straight from the tree.

Beneath, the chickens forage in the grass pecking off potential pests and fertilsing the tree with their droppings. Ecological cycle in action.

Pollinator Gardens
Easy. Beautiful. Beneficial.
Saturday is both #nationalhoneybeeday and the first annual, official Save the Bees Day in Wichita! Find more information about this day’s festivities at OldTownFarmersMarket.com.
Great choices for easy to grow flowers that provide plenty of nectar for honey bees and other pollinators is a combination of Zinnias, Hyssop, Bee Balm, and Echinacea.
This Zinnia bed is popping with life and color and only cost about $25 in 4 specific selections of seed varieties. (3 x 20 feet)
Monarch butterflies, in particular, love zinnias! In addition to bees, they pollinate them and use them for food and egg-laying habitat.
These pictures were all taken in our backyard Cottage Garden. (Chicken coop in the background)
Don’t forget to plant plenty of Milkweed too!
