anyone need some purslane? #abundance #eatyourweeds #omega3

Here's some mustard seed that's definitely getting in my belly! Think I might try a garlic mustard... #hungrynow #mustard #garlic #eatyourweeds #yum

Itโ€™s unreal how beautifully the purslane is growing in the aisles of the peppers. To bad itโ€™ll all get trampled. But then again it is a weed and itโ€™s growing all over the garden. Did you know that purslane is super nutritious that is high in omega 3 fatty acids, beta carotene and vitamin E? Come weed and you can take as much as you want! ๐Ÿ˜

This turkey has the moves! โ€ข

We planted an acre of forage for the hogs but with this drought, the weeds took over! Good thing turkeys love lamb's quarter. ...we been eating lots of it to! The pigs will follow the turkeys and clean up the weeds before they go to seed. โ€ข

Eat your weeds! This is a succulent known as purslane, (Portulaca oleracea), which might be growing in your yard right now. Purslane contains more omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable. It's also loaded with minerals and vitamins. To name a few: magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E.

Morning root harvest, before the heat sets in.
I love this plant so much and laugh now when people complain about it as a weed in their yard. It really makes you realize how life can be all about the perspective.

These dandelions were blooming away in the garden today. Its root juices are flowing strong when it's in bloom. Which is contrary to most plants. I love dandelion as a gentle liver herb. It's alternative and is great to take long term for deepened benefits. It lends itself well to be dried and used for tea. When roasted it has a lovely flavor that I often use at times to substitute for coffee.
This harvest was a good reminder that, while traveling hours to remote locations to harvest can be rewarding and needed, sometimes it is just as important to settle in and dig around deep in your own space. Find your roots and get connected.

Wild spinach was jumping out at me everywhere on my walk today. Still working on identification but I'm pretty confident I've found a very abundant source in a park nearby! Will post full plant photos later this week. Also known as lambs quater or pig weed and is a nutrition powerhouse.

Would you buy foraged wild spinach or other edibles? The more I learn, the more I see food everywhere labeled as weeds and mowed over or ripped up for grass or some other mono - crop. If only we could see that nature is abundant and provides, perhaps we can change our old agricultural ways?

WILD FOODS ARE THE MOST NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS...
.
.
I am still working my way through Eating on the Wild Side by Jo Robinson. I'm on the chapter about potatoes and other root vegetables. At this point I've also read about leafy greens, corn, onions, and garlic. One thing is clear, in nature, the most nutrient dense wild foods are small, colorful and bitter. .
.
Take wild purslane for example, it's slightly more tart and bitter than its domesticated cousin at the health food store (or even the farmers market, but ask your farmer, they'll know the variety they're growing). But that's where the nutrients are! In the tart, bitter taste. .
.
We have domesticated and selected crops with the highest sugar content over the years. Today, sweet onions contain as much as 16% sugar, the same % found in the sweetest apples today. Our sweet corn contains up to 40% sugar and is far less nutritious than our ancestor's multicolored corn. .
.
Put simply, wild foods are higher in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. And you'll get the most bang for your buck when you select purple varieties that are also high in anthocyanins - a powerful flavonoid that helps support the immune system, cardiovascular system, and also has cancer fighting abilities among other health promoting properties. .
.
Back to this beautiful wild purslane. It contains 6x more vitamin E than spinach and 14x more omega-3 fatty acids. And 7x more beta-carotene than carrots. So next time you see this "weed" creeping up in the garden, as long as you haven't sprayed the ground with round up or other nasties, pick it out, rinse it off and chop it up into a salad. Or just snack on it on the spot like I do. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ™Œ

Harvesting and drying Matricaria Discoidea - commonly known as pineapple weed or wild chamomile (pihasaunio in Finnish)๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŒฟ This lovely, aromatic plant grows as a common weed, I picked mine from our vegetable garden! Tastes like pineapple and works like chamomile, soothing and relaxing. Amazing for cooking or as tea, in a bath, for smudging etc. ๐ŸŒฟ

Weeds are so important! They are the plants of Mother Earth to help protect and nourish, they are keeping the flower beds and vegetable garden nice and moist, help to keep the humidity and protect everything you are growing. Also almost all of them are excellent for eating or/and have medicinal properties.
We stopped mowing our lawn. Our home turned into a Paradise with wild flowers growing everywhere, butterflies and so many edable wild weeds! ๐Ÿ˜ I am in love with this wilderness and nature really blooming and blossoming all around us! The green is so intense here, itโ€™s so overwhelming and so abundant that it stretches the capacity of being able to receive good things and beauty. Constantly finding your limits and letting them disappear, expanding again. Constantly growing and receiving more and more light.
We are nature. Everything is already here. Look. Experience. Trust. Look again. Everything is constantly in movement, transforming itself. ~ I am ready to receive it all. Ready to shine and to give all that I have. All that I am. Enjoying every step of the journey, every littlest step. ~

Went flower picking along the roadside today. Anyone want to take some guesses as to what I found? Some of them I haven't even identified yet, let's learn together!
