#Nike #MiddleEast came out with a new, empowering, feminist commercial and, fair warning, it's going to make you extremely emotional.
The ad starts out in a run-down suburb of #Dubai , where a woman adjusts her #hijab and nervously peers out her doorway before deciding "screw it" and going for a run in a Nike-branded #tunic . Despite the #fact that an older #woman stares her down, she keeps going like the badass she is.
Nearby, another woman goes skateboarding as a #man looks on angrily. "What will they say about you?" asks a woman in #Arabic in the voiceover. "They will say you shouldn't be here. That this is not for you, that this is not your #sport . Or maybe, they will say that you are strong. That no one can stop you." The ad confronts the tension in the Middle #East over women's active #lifestyles . For instance, many gyms don't allow women and men in the same area, and, in #SaudiArabia , women aren't allowed to participate in physical education in #school .
That didn't stop any of the ladies in this commercial, who run, parkour, #box , #swim , and ice skate. One of these #women is #Emirati parkour runner Amal Mourad, who said her own #experience fighting for the right to work out was challenging. "Convincing my #father [to let me train in a gender mixed gym] was the toughest part," she told Reuters. "If you want something bad enough you stick to it, and you can get it done." Literally just try to get through to the very end of this #video without #tears in your eyes. #hijabis #hijabi
