Another little guy finished. Pale green pattern this time 😊
I always want to add little handles to pots, but usually end up regretting it when I do. Still a little undecided on this one. What do we think?!

Having a leisurely morning after an all day workshop yesterday at the @theclaystudiophl. It was a great day, we went over how to expose a silk screen, printing on clay, transferring paper prints to clay, paper stencil masking, laser decal making, and China paint decals. It was a very full day. Here I going over how to test the shrinkage rate of the clay so the after-glaze-fire laser decal will scale correctly to my leather hard paper stencil.

A perfectly pointless pot! (But I enjoyed making it!)

I think this is the nicest vase shape I have thrown on the kickwheel so far. 1.5kg lump of earthenware clay 🏺

From bisque to glaze: the process takes a while for each firing. First you need to make sure the ware isn't too wet or explosions will occur. The bisque stage is the most probable stage you'll get a potential blow up but that can easily be averted by either drying slowly the greenware in the kiln while it's warming up, or by adding the ware in the kiln when it is fully bone dry and warm to the touch. After a bisque firing you often have to check the ware for any rough sensation to the touch and sand these down for a smooth finish (really important for tableware) unless this is the style you are aiming for. Then comes the fun of glazing: you must ensure the bisque ware is free of dust and other loose particles so the glaze doesn't flake during the firing. You also need to make sure the glaze is mixed at a good ratio and evenly spread on the pots or milkiness occurs (I learnt that the hard way first time I used my new glaze). Again you have a risk of blow ups if the glaze is still too wet when you load the kiln and start to fire. So I like to wait until the next day at the very least before I load the kiln and start my glaze firing. Other obvious aspects are kiln shelves maintenance, clean pot bottoms and props to avoid the glaze running and making a real mess. Firing takes a while each time: slowly crank up the temperature to avoid breakage, then soak time depending on program and finally cooling time. I never hold my ware above 50C but that's my preference. My kiln is a small 60L top loader, the biggest kiln I could get in my modest space. That means each load is small and overall firing time is non negligeable (an average of 2 full days start to finish for each firing). Then it's a bit 'pot of luck' excuse the pun when you open the lid 😉
