Along #Syria’s northeastern border, thousands of #female #soldiers are fighting an incalculably dangerous #war. They are the #YPJ, or the Women's Protection Unit - an all-women, volunteer #Kurdish military faction in Syria that formed in #2012 to defend the local population against the deadly attacks led by Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, the al-Nusra Front and ISIS.
For our global #womenmatter campaign, we have installed @erintrieb's image of YPJ fighters near @preusmuseum in #Norway. The caption of this image is: For the YPJ and their families, fighting is less of a decision more a means necessary of #survival; while choosing the life of a female soldier provides an outlet for women to play a role counter to the traditions of their culture. #ISIS #militants, who believe they will be deprived of heaven if killed by a woman, fear being killed more by female YPJ more than they do male soldiers.

As one soldier, Sael Morad, 20, put it, "we can do all the same things that men can do; women can do everything, there is nothing impossible for us.” Photo: @erintrieb

Last week at #RMIT I photographed an installation by #Dysturb, where they pasted an image by @rahimagambo. I'll be teaming up with them over the next week as they hit the Melbourne streets again, so keep an eye out for updates on my feed.

The caption on the image says, 'Rukkaya and Hadiza, both 18 years of age, pose for a portrait during break time in their school that was recently reopened after a two year closure following the abduction of schoolgirls from the nearby town of Chibok. They both remember having to put their school uniforms in plastic bags so they would not be targeted by the insurgent group. Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria.' #dysturb #rahimagambo

Outdoor locations – To be revealed soon⠀

#Dysturb is a network of photojournalists driven by the desire to make visual information freely accessible to a wider audience by pasting large images in city streets in over 30 cities globally. #Dysturb presents photojournalism in a new, innovative way, completely independent from the restrictions of conventional news publishing channels. They believe in arming the public with tools to further understand the images and information they see every day, with interventions in streets, schools and online. #Dysturb and the Ballarat International Photo will present a series of images in an effort to raise awareness on current global issues. This project will be visible throughout the centre of Ballarat and the community will be invited to attend paste-up sessions as well as visit the installations throughout the Biennale.⠀

Have you heard of 'Ala Kachuu'? This translates to mean 'to grab and run away,' and is a form of bride kidnapping still practised in Kyrgyzstan despite being banned.
Photographer Noriko Hayashi travavlled through the country to photograph this issue, and an image from her documentation (pictured above) has been included in our global #womenmatter campaign in #Horten, #Norway. The caption of this image: #NarynOblast, Kyrgyzstan. September 24, 2012. A 26-year-old man and an elderly female relative talk to 20-year-old Farida at his home. He is trying to convince her to marry him after he abducted her from the street in Naryn. He says: 'I promise you that you will be happy in the future so please marry me' to which she replies: 'You know that I have a boyfriend. Even if I married you, there would be no love in our married life.' Although illegal, non-consensual kidnapping is still happening. They are known as 'Ala Kachuu' that translates as 'to grab and run away'. 10 hours later, Farida’s brother arrived and rescued her from the family of a man who has kidnapped her. Few month later, Farida got married to her boyfriend.

For the #WomenMatter campaign, we've installed @annaboyiazis' image at #Pumpehuset in #Horten. This photograph (pictured), depicts swim instructor Kazija, 22, teaching Kijini Primary School students how to float in the #IndianOcean off of #Mnyuni, #Zanzibar.

The caption reads: October 19, 2016. Daily life in the Zanzibar Archipelago centers around the #sea, yet the majority of #girls who inhabit the islands never acquire even the most fundamental #swimming skills. Conservative #Islamic culture has compelled community leaders to discourage girls from swimming. Until now.

For the past few years, the #PanjeProject has provided #burkinis, full-length #swimsuits, so that women and girls can get into the water without compromising their cultural and #religious beliefs. The rate of #drowning on the #African continent is the highest in the world. Still, many community leaders have yet to warm up to the idea of women and girls learning to swim. The swimming lessons challenge a patriarchal system that discourages women from pursuing things other than domestic tasks.

Noticed anything different in #Horten? We've installed @glennagordon's image taken in #Kano, #Nigeria, which looks at the censorship of women in this society.

The caption of this photograph: April 21, 2014. Rabi Talle walks in the courtyard of her office in the Ministry of Information. Her next book is called "Victim of Love." She is part of a small but vibrant cottage industry of Muslim women writing romance novels, littattafan soyayya, in Northern Nigeria, a region best known for the acts of terrorist group Boko Haram.

The #writers face off with #Islamic censors and they sell their books in some of the same markets targeted by Boko Haram suicide bombers. The books are about love and marriage. Some are subversive and speak out against #humantrafficking and #childmarriage, while others are submissive, advising women on how best to please their husbands, offering fantasies of escape, and tales of the poor girl #marrying the rich man.

What is life like for a female #albino in #Mozambique? For Madalena Francisco Jorge, she finds simple tasks like walking to school or visiting a relative's home to be a dangerous task.

For our #WomenMatter campaign, we've installed @danirodriguesphoto's image (pictured), taken for @nytimes, in #Horten, #Norway so as to raise awareness to issues faced by women and their resilience.

The caption of the image: June 30, 2016. Madalena Francisco Jorge, 17, says yes, she is an albino. But beyond that, she is a human!

Frequently Madalena leaves her school classes because other students call her “money,” a derogatory term that stems from the fact that albinos were sold to practitioners of Black Magic for a large amount of money. She feels increasingly discriminated against and has now begun to feel afraid to walk down the street, especially alone, after a disturbing event that occurred last April; Madalena had spent the day at her aunt’s house and when she left to return home, a group of men searched the aunt’s property looking for her.
Since the graves of #albinos have been vandalized recently, Madalena wants to be cremated.

Curious about the installation process for our global #womenmatter campaign? Here is a #bts look at how we installed @meerikoutaniemi's image of two young #Maasai girls in #Kenya the day before their #circumcision ceremony!

The caption of this image reads: November 29, 2013. #Maasai-girls Isina & #Naserian are sitting in their father's hut a day before their planned circumcision. The @who estimates that there are more than 140 million mutilated women in the world. #Femalegenitalmutilation is a tradition practiced worldwide in 29 countries. Girls’ circumcision has been illegal in Kenya since 2001, but among some tribes such as the Masai people, it remains a valued tradition.

The tradition stems from the belief that woman’s sexual organs are impure. The intention is also to reduce women’s sexual pleasure and thus women’s #adultery.

#Femalegenital cutting has been widely deemed a violation of #humanrights and a serious impingement against women’s #sexual independence.

@maikaelan's 'The Pink Choice' shows the love between couples in the #LGBTQI #community, focusing on living spaces, affectionate touches and the synchronized rhythm of #lovers sharing life together. For #womenmatter, we installed an image (pictured) from this photo series on the corner in #Horten, #Norway.

The caption of this photograph: #HoChiMinh City, #Vietnam. June 22, #2012. Phan Thi Thuy Vy (1992) and Dang Thi Bich Bay (1992), both students, relax and watch television at the end of the day. They have been together for a year. Vietnam has historically been unwelcoming to #samesex relationships, but its #communist government is considering recognizing same-sex #marriage - which would make it the first #Asian country to do so, despite past #humanrights issues and a long-standing #stigma.
