🍑 Can we alter knee valgus in the squat? Picture we have some of the most commonly suggested methods utilized for preventing knee valgus in the squat: 1. banded knee, 2. neuromuscular training, 3. changing toe angle, and 4. hip strengthening.
🍑 The literature does not significantly support most of these methods as much as many believe. 1. The band on the knees has been researched multiple times and when the effort of the person gets higher, it actually shows the reverse effect, increasing valgus. 2. Neuromuscular training shows a small effect, but typically not with increased load. 3. Toe angle does not change valgus significantly either. 4. Hip strengthening does inconsistently demonstrate results for this; however, being one of the more evidence supported options.

Increased hip muscular strength in relationship to body weight plays an important role in reducing the potential for knee valgus once the increased strength is integrated into one's motor patterns. 🔑 Arch height varies.
🔑 Your ability to control your arch is what matters most.
↪️ You are able to address each, and well within your control to make positive change.
↘️ Many people confuse natural or genetic arch height with having ‘flat feet’.
👣 Flat feet = an inability to CONTROL pronation, which is primarily the responsibility of the joints/musculature upstream of the feet - HIPS playing a major role.
➖ Just because you have a LOW arch, doesn’t mean you have ‘flat feet’. You can have a low arch and have strong feet which you can control well.
➖ Just because you have a higher arch doesn’t mean you don’t have ‘flat feet’ (or uncontrolled feet). You can have higher arches but poor strength and ability to control these arches.
✅ It’s all about how you control your joints and body. Lack of control at the hips is usually the main culprit, having a domino effect downstream. The feet are good indicators of what is happening or not happening proximal n the kinetic chain.
➡️ Is it purely a stability control problem ❓
↪️ Mobility issues are also commonly present at the ankles and hips primarily, which contributes to the lack of control. However this can be changed with work!
✔️ The good news is that ‘flat feet’ can be changed over time. Spending time working on MOBILITY, MOTOR CONTROL, and STRENGTH are the keys.

Is your equipment plate efficient? Some of my favorite pieces have great movements, but are absolute plate hogs. They need tons of plates loaded for a reasonably strong client. Great for the ego, but a giant hassle for personal trainers and studio owners.

We are constantly asked what's the best rep range to train #glutes - the #gluteusmaximus is a complex muscle comprised mostly of Type I fibers, which is predominately an oxidative muscle fiber built for endurance and recovery and yet we regularly credit the gluteal group of muscles as being the most powerful in the human body, which is typically reserved for Type II muscle fiber and credit with higher jumps and faster running speeds. So, what to do? How to train?

🔹 The glutes act to produce and control motion in all 3 planes at the hips and pelvis. In addition, the muscle group serves as stabilizer and balancer, as well as considered by many as the most powerful muscle in the body. ❓ The question is, can you get your hips in a position where you are centrated (there is an ideal balance of mobilizers and stabilizers acting on the joint). If you can’t get your hip in an ideal position to express hip extension specifically, your glutes will be rendered inefficient.
🔹 The pelvis plays an important role in stabilizing the body's centre of mass, and it is important there is an ideal balance of muscle contractions serving to stabilize and produce desired movement. Myofascial imbalances around the pelvis/hip have the potential to create dysfunction anywhere in the body, from head to toe
🔹 The glutes are the most important muscle group in this region, and are also the most positionally inhibited, weak, and dysfunctional. Hint: sitting all day does not help the cause. If your anterior hip is ‘tight’ and dominant, then your posterior hip (glutes included) has a much harder time, as your joint centration is thrown off.
