As those of you that follow this page may or may not know, our Matthew was born with a condition called Achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism.Achondroplasia is a bone growth disorder that affects the long bones of the arms and the legs. Those bones in particular do not grow as efficiently as ours do which leads to a shorter stature. Some Dwarfism types are recessive and others are what are called “spontaneous mutations at conception”. This is Matthew's type, and the likelihood of it happening to us is just as likely as it would be, to happen to anyone.
80% of all people with dwarfism are born to average height parents. With a one in 25,000 -40,000 chance of being born with this condition. While our little handsome boy is doing great at the moment, his condition can come with several complications as he grows such as respiratory issues, sleep apnea, curvature of the spine, spinal stenosis, bowed legs to name a few. Tomorrow Matthew has his first appointment with a respiratory specialist. Im so anxious. I was ok until today but the reality of what tomorrow may bring is weighing heavy on my heart. We are only at the beginning of Matthew's journey and I fear the unknown . I pray that Matthew doesn't have obstructive sleep apnea as this would mean he stops breathing in his sleep and this effects the amount of oxygen he gets while sleeping. I just want to wrap him up in cotton wool and protect him from everything. As his parents we are his advocates. We are his protectors. I feel blessed that he choose us to be his parents and I will go to the ends of the earth for this boy. He has brought us nothing but love and joy since his arrival and he has given us a new perspective on life. I've always been a believer in the power of positive mental attitude, a negative mind will never give you a positive life #mywholeheart #raisingmatthewryan #dwarfism #achondroplasia #positivethinking #myboys_myworld💙💚 #positivementalattitude
