Today's #huxfarmhighlight is Betsie! She is our other newest member of the farm.
Betsie started out on the farm of some neighbors across the lake from us. They moved to the city, which she decided she didn't like, so she came back to their farm. The people caring for their farm have been unable to take good care of her so for the last year or so she has been wandering that neighborhood. There are several families that were doing their best by her, but this sweet girl had gotten in pretty bad shape. They were getting worried about her health as well as the fact that she liked to stand in the road and bark at cars and school buses. So the offer was made for us to give her a new farm home. She came to us super infested with fleas that a few of those neighbors had tried treating her for. We have treated her again and a flea bath is in her immediate future ;) She also had a bad case of worms that we treated her for as soon as she got here. Unfortunately since some well doers didn't know much about great pyrenees, her coat was shaved several months ago. This is something you really don't want to do on a double coated dog. There are so many bad consequences for them, and many other ways to care for their coat that are not harmful to them! Each owner has to make the best choice for their situation, but it is a decision that should not be made lightly. We do not shave our pyrenees. She now has a super matted slightly growing back in coat, that probably feels like a wool sweater to her. We are slowly but surely brushing the mats out.
She is very sweet, but slow to really trust. She doesn't mind the ducks at all, but gets a little possessive with Ragnar and Cameron about things she sees as hers (her dogloo, her food bowl, her special napping spots). Ragnar visits her through the fence and Cameron is keeping her company right now. We are helping her work through this and understand that she is safe here. That she doesnt have to "steal" food from her own bowl, she can just stay and eat it. And that she is now home and can be comfortable knowing all of this is hers including the animals to protect and a new doggie friend in Ragnar.
We are truly feeling blessed to have her
