Moon phases passed
Too many rose and fell in the time it took me
To climb up and slip down
Below the above
Camped on the doorstep of Fear.
In classrooms outside the Palace of Horrors,
I sat with souls like my own
Receiving lessons on remaining safe
While traversing dark paths and painful alleyways.
Red stained lips curved in a mockery of mirth
My cloak swirling closed around me,
It was my time to move beyond that safety
Into a world I'd never seen
Populated with demons and ghosts I'd tangled with on grounds above
Ones I would conquer
Or else I would make a home amongst them
Trading my courage for absent conflict,
Possibility for lack of risk,
Melding into darker shadows
Through caves that housed every fear, every secret, every shame I'd ever held
Walls held up, it seemed, only by vines composed of lies,
budding with the blooms of self deceit.
In a war waged by women,
This battle was mine to fight
Slaying my own beasts so that light could penetrate
Clearing space for my breath to fall freely.
Making room for my moon to rise
