I was able to get into DNO to try out the current special, and I’m glad I did. A flavour bomb, and although I’ve giving higher scores at DNO, I reckon this is my favourite.
In the early reviews I couldn’t tell if the chicken was any different to DNO’s usual Chick’N. This burger had a heap of cayenne, the top of the fried chicken was covered in it. The chicken itself was thin, the batter wasn’t brittle crunchy, but it worked well. It was more like a good quality KFC batter in texture.
The cayenne gave a fantastic spicy kick that combined so well with the JD BBQ sauce. Hot, spicy and sweet.
The slaw underneath it reminded me of the slaw that was used in the coca chicken special. Really creamy, which again combined so well with the sauce and cayenne.
The pickles in the city looked and tasted the same as the usual jumbo pickles, but they stood out a bit more, adding popping acidic sweetness from the bottom of the burger.
The fried green tomato’s added another crunchy element, and another source of acidity.
Adding bacon was a no brainer. It could have done with a little longer on the grill. It was thinly cut which worked in its favour.
Crunchy coated cheese did work. I’m not always sure a chicken burger needs cheese, but this did benefit.
