Transformation Tuesday - deadlift edition

You know how everyone always tells you “everyone starts somewhere!”... well here’s a little visual aid for you.

🎥 First video clip: 2 years ago, teaching myself to deadlift in my backyard with 185lbs on the bar. I didn’t care if i looked like a fool, i was determined to learn. I was determined to grow.

I had no coaching for a year and a half. I tried. I failed. I had fun. I learned that growing meant not maxing out every week, and that i had to work at increasing my strength with reps and sets at a sub-maximal load. I knew nothing about programming. Got myself up to a 305lb deadlift on my own, out of sheer stubbornness and determination to get better.

Don’t give up. And don’t let yourself make excuses. If you want it, you’ll find a way. Period. (P.s. i know they’re different stances. I pull over 400lbs in both conventional and sumo 🤙🏼)

I’ve never seen this done before, but I wanted to try it out. And it was amazing. I’m not crazy about hip belt squats because of the way they pull my hips under when using heavy loads. Doing them zercher style was amazing! Yeah it doesn’t feel incredibly comfortable on your elbow pit, so if that’s an issue for you don’t do it. If you can suck it up, this is awesome! You could also probably do it on a cable machine for similar results since I know not everyone has the belt squat machine. Doing it zercher style really helps me to keep a more upright torso position while loading the hamstrings. You can also feel your lats working overtime and it’s amazing. Strongly recommend!

Another great day at @rekoveryathletics with the crew. 3secs Pause BP today and hit an easy 425lbs for a single. This is a lighter day to prepare for a heavy bench day on Friday. My favorite kind of peanut butters are ones that ARENT packed full of protein & artificial flavorings. Weird huh? Idk about you but when i eat nut butter i actually want to be able to taste said nuts not some gritty gingerbread unicorn fairy dust cookie spread. That’s not nut butter 🙄 Skippy is probably my favorite peanut butter but I’m ALWAYS open to trying new products & when @abbysbetter asked if I’d review hers i couldn’t resist. I’m not a huge date person so that one wasn’t my favorite but the coconut cashew, like WOAH. Pretty sure half the jar is already gone via rice cakes to my mouth. It is definitely very natural tasting - flakes of coconut & an almost “caramel-ish” taste. 10/10 approve of this one. Plus I’m all about supporting small businesses and Abby is the SWEETEST girl. Go show her some love and get yourself some of her freshly made nut butters! Thanks again Abby!

Stronglifts day 16: squats up to 145 @ 5x5. Definitely struggled with depth today - id like to blame the song playing that appears to be haunting me (see my last squat video) but I know it’s because of tight hamstrings. Probably going to repeat this weight for Thursday’s workout as I really want to use this program to dial in on proper form. .

I resonate so much with this. I hate when people shame me for showing off my hard work. Like I’m sorry. Did you wake up at 6am every morning for weeks on end to do fasted cardio? Or skip out on social event because you didn’t want to be tempted by food off of your diet? Or fight yourself mentally to not give into to cravings or any other things that didn’t line up with your goal? No? Oh ok then I will show off my body and my hard work as much as i want! 💪🏻👏🏻💁🏼‍♀️

Going back to the basics.
Squatting has never been my strong suit. It’s always felt awkward, my knees hurt, my lower back hurts, yada yada. I’m really bad at pushing myself to do the things I suck at. I avoid squats because they make my knees hurt and I’m fucking weak on them lol.
I’m essentially re-teaching myself how to squat. Giving myself cues like I would give a client and making myself do the goddamn work. So here I am, squatting a measly 95 lbs. but I don’t even give a shit because FORM! I threw on some knee sleeves, properly warmed up my hams & calves and got to work. Recorded every set. Fixed what needed to be fixed. I’m going to slowly increase load throughout the upcoming weeks - if my form breaks down, I’ll back off a bit.
We all need to train intelligently, even coaches. It pays off in the long run 🤘🏻😎
