“Killer Tofu” by Doug & the Beets - Songs from Bluffington 7” (2015) @enjoythetoons
Every 90’s kids nostalgia detector goes off with the simple mention of the four letter word...Doug. The animated cartoon, Doug aired during Nickelodeon’s heyday and instantly brings back memories at first mention of characters Skeeter, Roger Klotz, Patty Mayonnaise and of course his trusty dog sidekick Porkchop. Doug Funnie gave a glimpse into the life of a kid in school during the 90's and all the ups and downs that one experienced at that age. Whether it be love trouble with heartthrob Patty Mayonnaise or bully problems with the leather jacket wearing, Roger Klotz. Throughout the series Doug would idolize his favorite band, The Beets, whose members draw direct parallels to Ringo Starr from the Beatles and Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin. This record is split between the A side, which features songs from the TV show, including the theme song; along with the B side, which features three tribute songs that were performed by the fictional band The Beets. The tribute band is comprised of four Long Island natives who preserved the bands 4-piece line up and music integrity to recreate the iconic songs you just can’t shake. “Killer Tofu” is arguable one of The Beets most recognizable “hit” songs that every fan of the show will be able to sing word for word, or at the very least the chorus, “aw-wee-oo, killer tofu”. Jim Jinkins is the creator of the show Doug, along with the animated kids show, PB&J Otter and Allegra’s Window which came out the years following. He drew inspiration from his childhood growing up in Richmond, Virginia to create the fictional town of Bluffington and everyday scenarios of Doug’s life; which also explain his love for drawing and his wandering imagination.
