👉 The side plank twist is one of my all time favourite exercise for building the obliques. Where a lot of people go wrong in training there Abs is either training their obliques ineffectively or completely neglecting them altogether. Your obliques need love to ya know. And for good reason too! The role that they will play in shaping your abs is crucial. They will create so much shape and sharpness that simply won't come from just doing crunches.
Another place that people mess up on is training them with too much resistance. If you're training for aesthetic purposes, then you'll won't to perform most of your Oblique work using bodyweight. The reason for this is to do with the ever sought after V Taper. When you train your obliques with a high resistance they will surely grow. And while a well developed set of obliques will give yourself a lot of shape, a too well developed set of obliques will give you a love handle appearance. Making your waist appear blocky and wider than it actually is. -
To combat this I generally recommend sticking with bodyweight exercises like this that are challenging enough to stimulate hypertrophy and keep the obliques around, but won't cause them to grow excessively. The idea is to grow them enough and then keep them tight! 👊🏼
