Had a phenomenal day visiting @columbia and @columbiajournalism because holy cats, I GO HERE NOW!
A year ago to the day I was depressed, empty, burnt out, and generally in a very deep, dark, bad place. I knew I wanted to write, but I didn’t know how to make that my professional reality. I felt stuck in my career– and if you’ve ever felt that way, you know how inescapable it seems. But change is inevitable; this change in particular was mandatory. I’ve spent the last year freelancing, building my portfolio, and applying to grad school. Getting into Columbia feels like a dream. I’ll pinch myself; am I sleeping? Will I wake up in May of 2017? But I’m not, and I don’t. The ever-increasing unrest and division and roiling of the world at large coincided with my personal journey. Dedicating myself to the pursuit of truth, and speaking that truth to power, has never been so desperately and vitally important. Our institutions are in jeopardy, the freedom of the press isn’t as free as it needs to be for our democracy to properly function. It’s time to join the fight; the future of our country will be determined by the outcome. 📸: @idontlikeribena
