Waste not, want not. After upgrading our VoIP network with new telephones, I've decided to make the necessary on-board connections to one of our previously used Aastra 480i telephones in order to construct a DIY door phone with the capability to tie into our IVR and paging system.
I'll use several RJ45 cables, stripped on one end and tinned with solder to connect to the positive and negative terminals of the speaker, mic, call progress LEDs and the pads of several DSS/Speed dial keys, etc.
Then, I'll run those to a small project box where I'll connect the speaker, mic, LEDs and push buttons and mount it to the door frame with adhesive strips. A guest at the door that presses the doorbell or delivery keys can then be routed to a cell phone, desk phone or a mailbox to leave a message.
Cost of SIP compatible door phone with one button: $250.
Cost of my DIY: About $2.00 in solder and several hours of time. Savings: $248.
