From the first time I spoke publicly over 15 years ago to now the message has remained :
“Once the crowd settled and James ( @jb_plus_two ) made his remarks, it was my turn to speak. Nervously, I opened my mouth and, to my surprise, didn’t sound that bad. I encouraged the fathers to be active participants in their sons’ lives. I expressed to them that I had a better relationship with my father who was doing life in prison than many men from our communities had with their sons in freedom. Knowing that a big part of the problem with absent fathers in the hood was due to mass incarceration, I asked them not to take chances with their freedom. “Don’t get taken. Your sons and daughters need you.” Excerpt From: Tony Lewis Jr With K.L. Reeves. “Slugg A Boy's Life in the Age of Mass Incarceration.” Tony Lewis Jr With K.L. Reeves , 2015. iBooks.
