When president Thabo Mbeki signed a book for me. Let me retell you the funny story behind the hashtag at the bottom.
I had been invited to a forum of young people to talk to the former president. There were about 15 or so of us. I sat down just about anywhere.
An older gentleman wearing shots came up to me and whispered to me, "The president is going to sit next to you, make sure no one takes this seat." He pointed to a seat.
I panicked immediately. I spoke to my friend Nzinga, who had invited me and ask her to take my seat. She refused.
Eventually the president arrived, he sat down, shook my hand and introduced himself. We made some small talk.
It was this point where I ruined everything. I had recently got my hands on an iPad. I must have had one of the very first ones in the country.
While everyone was still chatting, I unlocked it and opened Notes. Then he leaned over asked, "What's that?"
"Oh this? It's an iPad." "What does it do?"
"Pretty much anything you can do on your phone." I said.
"What are you going to do with it now?" He asked.
"I will write notes as you speak." I said.
He shook his head while smiling, "Don't do that." I packed it away very sheepishly. I realized that I would be punching notes and distracting him while I sat right next to him. I had never even thought of that.
I told my friend this story. So this friend of mine Rose, devised a plan. She borrowed A Dream Deferred because she wanted to "read it". She tracked down his office and the president and reminded him of the story and then asked him to hashtag, #DontDoThat 😂😂😂😂😂😂 What a thoughtful present from Rose! She gave it to me a month later on my birthday.
