Meet Rico! He’s just about a year old and weighs 40 lbs.
Rico came to ACDRA from a shelter in South Carolina. Kennel stress got the best of him and he wasn’t doing well. Since rescue, Rico has adjusted nicely. He is sweet and affectionate with humans and doesn’t like to be too far from them.
He is highly attentive and a very quick learner. He has no evidence of ever living in a home- he’s quickly learning basic commands such as sit, off, and leave and is still working on being house broken. He has had a few accidents in the house, but this has significantly improved in the short time we have had him. Keeping true to his cattle dog nature, he loves having a job to do. Rico is given meals through interactive puzzle games and he absolutely loves them and it keeps him busy and engaged. His other favorite job is making sure he brings all his blankets one by one from his crate upstairs into the living room downstairs.
Rico is one energetic boy and will need lots of exercise to keep him well behaved at home. He would be amazing at agility. He has no qualms about jumping fences and has attempted to hop the 4 ft gate in our house. The shelter also mentioned him jumping fences, but we let Rico out in the backyard and he hasn’t tried to escape (we have 6ft stockade fencing and a small area with 4ft chain link). He happily rummages through the leaves or chomps on toys while he’s out there.
He will need a firm owner who can teach him the ropes of properly living in a home. He’s a young guy and hasn’t learned what’s okay to chew on- he can be mouthy with hands and loves to chew on just about anything including socks, blankets, and shoes. Rico seems to be very interested in other dogs. He has met with our resident dogs, and has showed no signs of aggression- he wags his tail and initiates play, but is a little too energetic for our pack of dogs. The shelter dog tested him and said he was good with other dogs as well. He has not been cat tested.
Rico is waiting for his forever home in CT! ♥️ check out our site for more info! This boy needs an experienced heeler home who is ready to work with him. It’ll pay off - he is SO full of love!
