DECODING FISH OIL LABELS ⠀

Have you been prescribed fish oil by your nutritionist, or read one of the endless number of internet pages that recommend fish oil for every condition under the sun? Let’s have a look at what is actually the active ingredients on the label. In this example, there is 4330mg of fish oil, but that’s not the goods. A lot of bottles or pills will have “2000mg of fish oil!” on the label, which is excellent for marketing, but not super helpful for your health. The actual ingredients you want to look for are the EPA and DHA levels, as these are the ones doing all the work. Add together the EPA + DHA label (in this case, you get 2219mg if active ingredients). I typically recommend around 2,000mg of combined EPA+DHA to my folks, as this is a great therapeutic dose. There is some interesting research coming out now using much higher levels, but starting at 2,000mg will give you a great starting dose.⠀

For interest: This bottle is particularly high in EPA. EPA has been shown to have great benefits for dry skin, asthma, eczema, cognitive function and in mental health disorders, including depression and dyslexia, as well as bone and joint health conditions. It can even help in Parkinson’s and MS! You know I love anything that contributes to a healthy, long-living brain! 🧠🐠

Workout tip: squats are a great compound full body workout that mainly targets muscles in your legs. They can be done at home with no weight of at the gym with weight ether way the best way to get the most out of your workout is by making sure you get full extensions and also go down as deep as possible. I like to rotate and do squats 3 times per week with weight that way my legs have plenty of time to rest.

Your daily reminder to breathe! I absolutely love this breathing technique, also called Alternate Nostril Breathing. It’s one of the biggest things I’ve gotten out of my current yoga teacher training undertakings. I’m pretty bad at actually doing my meditation, but this has really helped settle my mind and get me in a prepared state for the rest of my day. It can take as much or as little time as you like, I like to do it as soon as I wake up. Alternate nostril breathing realigns both hemispheres of the brain, helping them work in tandem, while bringing a cooling sensation to the body. Try it now! Try it before lunch! Try it before your kids start to harass you! Do it before bed! Try to do it once, twice, or three times a day. It’s so simple, anyone can do it. Warning: you might want to blow your nose first 🤧
