It’s been a rough week. There have been emotional ups and downs, and life affecting if not altering diagnosis. Normally, I’d try to review a new book. Instead, I’m going to curl up with my heating pad, coffee, and a comfort read: The Golem and the Jinni.
I picked this book up on a lark, the premise seemed interesting (Creatures out of Jewish and Arab myth, hell yes!). I fell in love with it almost immediately, and it quickly became added to my list of yearly reads and influential books.
If you love character studies, you’ll love this book. It’s completely driven by its characters learning to cope with the strange world they find themselves in. A shape-shifting fire demon trapped in human form, and a built-to-please woman with the strength of an ox and the earnestness of a child, stuck in NY trying to fit in and thrive.
Helene Wecker has a beautiful style, and I can’t wait for another book from her.
