Today as we celebrate a triumphant victory in North Dakota for indigenous rights, the environment, and the power of the people to change the course of history, I visited a little town not far from Guatemala City called Chinautla. I was stunned by the amount of garbage and pollution in the river. It felt as though our Mother Earth had been abused and pillaged, and it becomes clear that this issue of clean water and waterways is one of the most urgent public health matters. It is necessary to work to create a consciousness regarding this issue, to urge politicians to enact policies that protect the water supply, and support organizations and local governments who are working to educate people regarding trash and water contamination. Many of us who live in Guatemala City, or any place in the world for that matter, rarely leave the comforts of our homes - where clean water runs to our tap - to witness the destruction that is taking place. Let's not wait until it is too late. Will we only react when our own drinking water is impacted? The power of the people to impact social change is monumentous and on this day of great victory for water rights and indigenous rights, let's all join together to do our part to make the world a better place.
