The Kiyosumi was a relatively large vessel that now rests at modest depths offering plenty of opportunity for exploration. Huge gun mounts can be seen on the deck although guns were not fitted when she sank. There is, however, a twin barreled anti-aircraft gun in the wreckage of the main superstructure close to the still accessible engine room. In the after holds are remains of a bicycle, spare propeller blades, 55-gallon drums and on deck, you can find a torpedo launcher.

"Amagisan Maru, the wretched lady. Attacked in 5 raids from sea and air over her 2-year service in the Pacific war before meeting her doom in Truk Lagoon in 1944. Her 3.7-inch bow gun lies dead in the water, pointing straight forward with no elevation as a stark reminder of how the attack took the crew completely by surprise." says our Truk Master cruise manager.

"On the beautiful Momokawa Maru, which is packed with beautiful ordnance and an engine room to di(v)e for, I usually take some time to look at the water filter that lies by the bridge of the ship, for a good reason.

Portable Japanese carbon activated water filters in WW2 are a brainchild of Surgeon General Shiro Ishii, a man whose name is usually associated with developing some horrible biological weapons for the Japanese in WW2. Ishii is also responsible for Unit 731, a secret compound which conducted heinous human experiments on over 10.000 people “supplied” by the Japanese secret police. Just before the Japanese lost the war, Ishii ordered the plant destroyed and covered everything up, including killing his "logs" and their families which were in his "sawmill" facility.
His main focus might have been on death, but he had a brief visit to defensive medicine to keep “expendables” alive by inventing an instrument that prevented waterborne disease.

Dig into history, and you never know what you will find." says our Truk Master cruise director

"Discovered as late as in 1982 by Klaus Lindemann - the Momokawa Maru surprisingly presents one of the wrecks in Truk that is hardly visited.
The part of this wreck I enjoy the most is as you enter through the horizontal skylights, there is a spider web of ladders and catwalks that pull you in to find this remarkable vintage-sci-fi console and throttle.
Truly one of the most beautiful engine rooms in the lagoon." says our Truk Master cruise manager.

“The Diagonal Ship” Gosei Maru in Truk Lagoon, Micronesia. These mass produced coastal freighters were essential to the Japanese in the pacific war and the Gosei Maru was carrying their signature torpedos. Their torpedos were vastly superior to their enemies in the sense the Japanese had solved the problem of using oxygen for combustion within the torpedo that led to an almost wakeless, fast and extremely effective weapon. Explosions can be heard every now and again on the Gosei Maru, as the oxygen tanks inside the torpedos rupture. Photo Courtesy of Martin Cridge. @aronarngrimsson

The famous air compressor inside the engine room workshop of the Fujikawa Maru with my good friend Bill Coltart. The Cousteau Truk Expedition discovered the wreck in 1969 and subsequently, as Star Wars came out in 1977, the compressor earned its famous nickname "R2D2". I dare to say a much more fitting nickname now would be "Bender" from Futurama? PM me for more info to experience THE best wreck diving in the world. Photo Courtesy of Iain Kenny.

[Inside the Shinkoku Maru]
Amazing coral growth and lots of interesting marine life make this a standout wreck dive in Truk Lagoon. The large engine room is accessible through a torpedo/bomb hole on the port side. Both bow and stern guns are intact and heavily encrusted with life. Inside the superstructure is the sickbay complete with operating table. Elsewhere there are accommodation spaces with tiled baths, galley and lots of fueling hoses. There are 3 telegraphs in the remains of the bridge and piles of artifacts lay scattered all around the decks.

holding one of the 1000’s of 7.7mm bullets scattered in the forward hold of what is left of the Sankisan Maru. Try and imagine a 500kg bomb dropping into a hold like this full of ammunition and explosives, eliminating half of the ship in a spectacular explosion. The only hint of an aft ship remains is a small section of the keel, rudder, and propeller flung into a man made bomb crater of destruction in 46m of water. This picture is taken at 24m of water. You know when you have experienced that “what the hell am I doing here” moment? Well, I had one recently… I was submerged 6 atmospheres, in one of the holds of a requisitioned cargo vessel sunk in World War 2 in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the hold are thousands of tons of explosives. The picric acid (the main ingredient in Japanese explosives) had dissolved the protective coating and reacted with the metals surrounding it. This means the entire ship is fizzing with highly active 73-year-old Japanese shimose powder. Breaking the scenario down, thoughts go through my mind and, I smirk in my mask. At that very moment, there is a great memory etched in my mind to cherish forever. Diving has blessed me with so many incredible experiences, friendships, challenges, and adventures. It is hard to believe that the best is yet to come. Photo Courtesy of Bill Coltart.

[Inside the Fujikawa Maru]
A must dive on any trip to Truk Lagoon the Fujikawa is probably the most famous wreck in the lagoon. Inside the holds divers will find the remains of Japanese fighter planes, spare plane parts (belly tanks, propeller blades, tires and wheels), shell casings, machine guns, gas masks, cooking utensils, beer bottles fuel drums and much, much more. Large guns sit on the bow and stern. Although the roof of the engine room has collapsed in recent years penetration of the machine shop with lathe, bench drill, grinding wheels and air compressor is still possible.

[Heian Maru]

Originally used as a cargo ship, it’s the largest ship in the lagoon and one of the most popular with divers. It’s 165m (510ft) in length and lies on her port side in 34m (110ft) of water. Within her holds you will find torpedoes, shells, submarine periscopes and many other items

The Yamagiri Maru was a 439ft/133m, 6,438-ton passenger-cargo ship. She was designed with a raised composite (block) superstructure, a long bridge island amidships, and kingposts shaped like goal posts. She had an impressive cargo carrying capacity with six holds.

On February 17th 1944 planes from the USS Yorktown west of Dublon apparently damaged the Yamagiri Maru with aerial reconnaissance showing her with her stern lying low in the water. She reportedly suffered two close misses and one direct hit. The next day she was struck by one 1,000-lb and one 500-lb bomb from an altitude of 500 feet by Curtis Helldivers from the USS Bunker Hill, resulting in a huge explosion and a large fire with black smoke rising up to 4,000-5,000 feet. The spreading fires probably caused secondary explosions, and she sank rapidly. Twelve of her crew perished.

The main attraction of the Yamagiri Maru is the large artillery shells found in Hold No. 5. These 3 ½ feet long, 14-inch diameter projectiles were being carried as replacement ammunition of the main-armament guns of battleships. There are also air compressors, loading equipment and construction equipment located at the bottom of this hold, and the engine room is well worth a visit.

When you visit Chuuk Lagoon you really do dive deeper into history...
Chuuk Lagoon is often referred to as an underwater museum and with good reason as the number of artefacts that still can found on the wrecks is quite simply astonishing as hardly any commercial salvage work was ever carried out on the wrecks. What will you find?
