Unfortunately I only have a few days left in Brazil and I wanted to share one of my favorite activities: participating in a capoeira workshop. Capoeira is the traditional afro-brasilian martial art that was used by slaves and disguised as a dance so that their masters wouldn't know they were practicing self defense. If you are interested in going abroad but don't know where to start, make sure you give @diversityabroad a follow!

Pic 1: This is Gail B. from South Africa, I met her on my flight into Paris before I reached Rome. As curiosity would have it we somehow ended up talking our entire flight. One topic on politics lead to another that lead to another, I learned a lot and I was able to fill her in on a few things as well. She made me aware of the difference in regards to the conversation about race in Africa and her unique experiences/ opinions on the whole thing. To quote her "talk solution not hate". She was soft toned and so so passionate about the idea of hate not contributing to awareness and growth. She then began to tell me that she had been a part of a writing club in Cape Town and that diverse thinking within it is encouraged and also why it is so important to be around and also hear things from people that do not necessarily agree with you. Shared meaning is the only way that these kind of conversations can be productive. Gail Barton gave me so much inspiration before I landed and began this journey. Also learned the phrase "Saved our Bacon" (A story for another day). We exchanged contacts, hugged, and went our separate ways. Amazing what you hear from people from different walks of life, I hope to visit Gail in Cape Town one day. This is what diversity abroad means to me. #DiversityAbroad #DiversityMatters #OverseasAmbassador #DeterminedToChangeTheWorld🔗❤️🌎

Prompt for the week:
What does my home look like overseas? • I am staying in Chiang Mai at Uniserv, Green Nimman CMU (Chiang Mai University) Residence. This is like a dorm but not exactly. This is a off campus hotel run CMU students, which is really cool because it's actual experience for their studies. This reminds of my university back home with its learn by doing philosophy. When on campus we have to wear the uniforms you see pictured. The second photo is what the outside looks like and the third is inside my room. Excited for the next 4 weeks to come!

Today was EXTREMELY powerful as I had a chance to tour the Old City. I was able to walk the path where Jesus carried the cross to be crucified, I saw where we was crucified, where they cleaned his body afterwards before laying him to rest, where he was laid to rest, the wailing wall, the dome of the rock, amazing food, and a whole lot more. I plan to visit these places a couple of times while I am here. Words can not even describe the energy in these places, especially the church. Just wow. @diversityabroad @risathuji #diversityabroad #unlockyourpassport #myRISexperience

Dare to Be

When a new day begins, dare to smile gratefully.

When there is darkness, dare to be the first to shine a light.

When there is injustice, dare to be the first to condemn it.

When something seems difficult, dare to do it anyway.

When life seems to beat you down, dare to fight back.

When there seems to be no hope, dare to find some.

When you’re feeling tired, dare to keep going.

When times are tough, dare to be tougher.

When love hurts you, dare to love again.

When someone is hurting, dare to help them heal.

When another is lost, dare to help them find the way.

When a friend falls, dare to be the first to extend a hand.

When you cross paths with another, dare to make them smile.

When you feel great, dare to help someone else feel great too.

When the day has ended, dare to feel as you’ve done your best.

Dare to be the best you can –

At all times, Dare to be! -Steve Maraboli #DiversityAbroad #UnlockYourPassport #OverseasAmbassador #DiversityMatters
