BUTCHCAMP butch stripes: 'Learning patterns of male behaviour is part of learning how to negotiate men's exercise of authority as parent, brother and employer. Working through the stereotype means – among other things – taking up impersonation as a reworking of women's histories with men. It may also mean engaging in a practice of rememberance: one of Torr's characters, Charles Beresford, is a tribute to a close friend lost to Aids two years ago. "Charles was a writer and somebody I really studied in terms of his way of dealing with the the world. My own brother also does is Aids. He was a drag artist, he'd performed since he was seven. He was the one who introduced me to drag. By being Charles Beresford, I'm also my brother. I've incorporated him as well... I feel that you can actually keep a person's presence alive by filing the vacuum, by being a man part of the time; it's like a contribution to a wonderful man I've lost."' Diane Torr as Charles Beresford in Diva, February 1995. Interview by Tina Papoulias #butchcamp #butchstripes #divadyke #moustache #butchvisibility
