There will be enough women on the Supreme Court when there are nine.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I learned long ago, via @profrock, that a tattoo is a commitment - a commitment in permanent ink to your body. It damn well had better mean something.
I always knew I wanted a tattoo. It took years to decide on tattoo number one, and when I knew what I wanted, I knew it in an instant. And that's what I have - a symbol for joy and music. Joy because it is everlasting - the feeling that life is worth living even when you are in your darkest moment. Happiness is fleeting. Joy is the undercurrent that keeps you moving forward. And music because I love it.
On June 27, 2018, I knew what I wanted - when there are nine. For me, the phrase is not only about nine women on the Supreme Court of the United States. It's also about the sea change in trust, respect, equality, and equity that this country will have to undergo for there to be nine women on the Supreme Court. It won't happen in my lifetime, and it won't happen in yours. That doesn't mean we don't do the work. This is my permanent reminder to do the work - even on those days when life feels dark, and my chronic illness leave me without energy and cranky.
Thank you to @mynameis_stef for making it happen on my birthday. We're working on something else - coming soon.
Happy Birthday to me.
And before someone gets huffy about the direction of the tattoo - this is for me so I can read it.
