Gerakan peristaltik usus merupakan gerakan involunter otot longitudinal yanh melingkar pada saluran pencernaan, namun terkadang gerakan tersebut juga terjadi pada tabung berongga lainnya yang ada didalam tubuh yaitu kontraksi gelombang progresif. Gelombang peristaltik terjadi di esofagus, lambung, dan usus. Gelombang bisa pendek, terjadi refleks lokal atau kontraksi panjang dan berkelanjutan pada seluruh organ

Peristaltik adalah serangkaian relaksasi dan kontraksi otot yang terjadi pada lapisan usus. Proses Peristaltik ini memungkinkan untuk limbah dan produk makanan akan didorong melalui usus.
- Dari Kerongkongan Ke Perut
Dalam proses ini, ketika air atau makanan memasuki saluran gastro-intestinal, otot-otot di saluran ini bersantai dan menekan dengan gerakan yang bergelombang supaya memungkinkan isi untuk dapat lewat. Misalnya, ketika Anda menelan apel, otot-otot halus di kerongkongan bersantai dan berkontraksi untuk memungkinkan apel untuk lewat. Otot-otot yang berkontraksi memungkinkan isi untuk melewati ke daerah dengan otot rileks lebih rendah di kerongkongan. Ini terus berlanjut sampai makanan mencapai lambung. Otot-otot di atas tetap berkontraksi untuk mencegah makanan mengalir kembali.
- Dari Perut Ke Usus Besar
Setelah makanan telah pindah dari kerongkongan ke lambung, lambung memaksa isi perut melalui usus. Pertama, makanan tersebut akan dipindahkan ke usus kecil untuk pencernaan.
Proses ini difasilitasi pemindahan gas dari sistem pencernaan untuk menghindari penumpukan. Saat ini ada beberapa kontraksi di usus kecil, usus besar hanya mengalami dua atau tiga kontraksi dan relaksasi, yang memungkinkan kotoran untuk dibuang dari tubuh melalui anus
