Checking out the tide pools at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. We saw many creatures, but the tiny sea star was my favourite

He goes by a lot of names: Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, or simply Santa. For my wife, Shannon and I, he was, above all, “Dad.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For over a decade, I am honored to have learned from, been guided by, made memories with and grown alongside “Santa.” When I asked to marry his daughter @shanns2205 in 2013, I am not sure if I was more nervous by the weight of the ring that patiently sat in my pocket or the blessing that I needed to earn from a truly incredible, larger-than-life man and his very special "Claus Family." Not a wanna-be, fake-beard imposter – my father in-law, Don, was the real thing whose kindness, charm, selflessness, humor and joy truly embodied the spirit of Christmas. Just ask the countless children, including my little sister, who grew up dazzled by his surprise visits during the holiday season for over 20 years. Or all the adults, including nurses, doctors, local business owners and families, whom he made true and longtime believers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the weekend, it is with a heavy heart and great sadness that “Santa,” my father-in-law, Don, passed away after a brave fight with pancreatic cancer. He was 70. For the loved ones he leaves behind, Don was of course more than just “Santa.” He was a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, neighbor, colleague, friend, Vietnam War veteran and human being. He brought light, positivity and joy everywhere he went, continuing to make jokes and laughs even until the very end.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They say that our loved ones never truly leave us. While Don’s passing leaves an enormous hole in our lives that will be impossible to fill, I know that he will live on in the kindness he showed, the comfort he shared, the dedication he carried, and the unconditional love he brought into our lives. We will honor him in our own work, strive to always embody the lessons he instilled in us and celebrate his magic and love for life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank you for making me a better man, for the example you've set, for the impact you've made in so many lives, and for making us always believe, Don. Rest in peace. We love you forever ♥️ #RIP

Have you come across a kelp crab in an Oregon tidepool before? These crabs are actually in a large group called spider crabs. They generally have long legs with relatively small body, usually conspicuously pointed in front. This species is usually dark brown, with a roughly squarish carapace except for the pointed front. Males are a bit larger than females and may be as much as 93 mm (almost 4 inches) across. Younger crabs may be olive-green as well as red or brown. (PC: @deep_blue_eyes26 )

Another great shot from today’s #DiscoverOregon Ride!

We made it to a neat little lake today. Some spots around the lake were pretty dang cold. Didn't find the waterfalls we were looking for, but there will be other days. Thanks for adventuring with me @futrmrsb!! #adventurebuddies #frosty #fall #livingmyPNWlife

Slow day fishin sure beats the hell outta anything else #salmonfishing #fishing #discoveroregon

Did some hiking today out near Estacada. We did not expect the wind. There were a few gusts that almost pushed us off of the mountain. But it was still an awesome day with a perfect view of #MtHood.

“When you get older, plainer, saner
Will you remember all the danger
We came from?
Burning like embers, falling, tender
Longing for the days of no surrender
Years ago”

It is windy up there. Quite the view from the top of the #TableRocktrail
Hood, Jefferson, Rainier, AdamS, St. Helens and the Three Sisters peaks all visible today. Amazing.
