So after 4 years of doctors not knowing what is wrong with me, I have finally reached a diagnosis of hereditary arthro-ophthalmodystrophy (Sticklers dysplasia) a rare genetic condition that affects the joints, eyes, ears, and heart. Although I don't have any of the mutations for condition, my geneticist based on my symptoms, having problems with my eyes, joints and overall physical appearance. I have mixed emotions about this diagnosis, on one hand I'm happy that I can finally put a name to my issues, but not so happy due to what the future holds for me. #chronicillness #sticklersyndrome #geneticillness #hypermobility #disabledgay

Nine years ago, today on a beautiful spring afternoon, I was training a double back flip on a trampoline. I opened up too early and landed on my neck. I was conscious the whole time and remember hearing the sound of the C5 vertebrate in my neck breaking, while noticing my arms flying in front of my face without having control of them. I remember laying on the trampoline with my coach by my side. The sun shining and the birds chirping, all I could feel was a sense of calm rush over me. It was such a surreal moment in my life, I knew I was paralyzed, but for some reason I was not worried nor upset. I knew everything was going to be just fine, regardless of the outcome. This image was taken exactly a week before my #rebirth on the same trampoline. I like to think this is how beautiful I looked on my way down. I have accomplished so many things these short nine years. Learning how to breathe, swallow, and care for my new body. Regaining my independence after living with my parents for one short year. Returning to school and creating my artwork. Becoming an advocate and gaining a sense of pride for my disability. Mentoring and empowering other disabled people. Now I am off to #yale to get my MFA in photography! However, I would not have been able to do any of this without my amazing family and friends! This post is to thank all the amazing people in my life that have helped me become the person I am today!
