Patsy Toop was a top personal injury lawyer who, on a daily basis, was witnessing the challenges of people who had obtained disabilities trying to integrate back into the community. When she met one of the founders of WISE Employment in 1992 she could not resist becoming an integral part of the organisation that was committed to changing the disability employment industry. The highlights for Patsy include the work WISE has managed to conduct in a very competitive environment to establish exciting projects, such as its work in #socialenterprises. In 2016, Patsy was recognised for her advocacy and community service as a recipient of the 2016 Victorian Honour Roll for Women. #wise25 #disabilityadvocacy #disabilityawareness #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #IDPwD #pwd #socent #socentAU

“Before I went to WISE Employment, I couldn’t talk to anyone or be in a group. It was having someone to talk to and that listened to my problems that got me out to try different things,” says Alice, whose #scoliosis limits her ability to stand or sit for too long. “WISE were so helpful and supportive.” Alice is now responsible for opening and closing the @st_vincents_de_paul_society (St Vincent De Paul) shop on Saturdays, organising the volunteers and supporting people with training and development. She has not only found a job that suits her and that has helped her to grow, but she also now feels like she’s part of a family at work. #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork

“When I first met Brian, who lives with an intellectual and psychiatric disorder, I could tell that he was adamant about wanting to start work. After getting to know him, I could see that he was an extremely honest and loyal person and I knew these qualities would help him secure a role. We did need to put in some groundwork to get Brian in a position to start applying for roles. This included personal support, training for work and general employment preparation that we specialise in for those who have not worked for a long time.” Brian has been employed at Kelpomex for nearly three months. Well done, Brian! #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork

Following his cancer treatment, Sam was referred by Peter Mac to WISE Employment, who, upon reviewing his skill-set, medical restrictions and ongoing tests, found him a role as a concierge at The Bank Apartments in Melbourne. Here, Sam is responsible for managing the front desk, security and conducting floor checks throughout the building. Sam is now in remission. Known to his colleagues and residents as a chirpy chap that’s always smiling and eager to help, his long-term goal is to support the community by returning to the Victoria Police Academy. #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #cancer #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #resilience

Nicole suddenly became unemployed after 10 years working for the same company, and found herself facing one of life’s biggest challenges, #cancer, on top of #PsoriaticArthritis. Nicole fell into #depression, but after two years of #unemployment, decided to engage WISE Employment to help her find a job. Within about a month with WISE, Nicole landed a role at Iron Studio Gym. Nicole now walks without a stick, regularly goes to the gym with her daughter and is thriving in a #workplace that is understanding of her disability. “I love my job, I enjoy the responsibility and I feel like the mother hen at work. I even go into the gym on my days off!” She’s grateful that WISE helped her to not only find a job that she loves and where she’s made new friends, but also a workplace that supports her to achieve personal #goals. #wise25 #arthritis #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #mentalhealth #disabilityawareness

Donovan is instrumental in connecting the hearing and #Deaf community through Sign Language Australia, a business which he founded with friend Barry. Together they’re on a mission to improve the lives of their fellow Deaf Australians, by sharing the #Auslan language and culture of the Deaf community with the Deaf, hard of hearing or hearing communities. Sign Language Australia has been operating for one year and through the support of WISE Employment, Donovan has been able to extend the program offering with workshops for children with #autism. “WISE supports many people who are disadvantaged or disabled and their knowledge and understanding of diverse communities has meant we’ve been able to help children who have autism learn sign language to support their speech skills or as their main way of communicating. This is a wonderful thing and something we’re proud of working together on.” #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #disabilityawareness #signlanguage #hardofhearing #SignLanguageAustralia #SouthAustralia #deafness

Barry first came across WISE Employment when he partook in a program under the #Deaf and Hard of Hearing Unit in South Australia. Through WISE and this specific unit, Barry was able get ongoing support and career development assistance. Today, Barry is well-known and highly regarded in the Deaf community across Australia. He and friend Donovan have embarked on a new venture, ‘Sign Language Australia’, offering training programs for Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals, families and corporate organisations as well as those living with #autism. For Barry, the icing on the cake has been securing WISE Employment as one of his clients. When Barry and Donovan aren’t in training, Barry shows off his comedic skills with his “Naughty Hands” show. Barry’s aim is to improve the lives of his fellow Deaf and hard of hearing Australians, by bringing #Auslan into more people’s lives. #wise25 #SouthAustralia #signlanguage #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #hardofhearing #SignLanguageAustralia #deafness

A decade ago, Paul’s life took a tumble as he was involved in a life-threatening car accident that left him enduring 12 operations and ultimately the amputation of his right leg. Never one to give up, Paul persevered through an extensive #rehabilitation process and within a few years was able to walk again with the help of a prosthetic. The biggest challenge that awaited Paul was returning to the workforce. WISE helped Paul secure a role as dedicated tutor at Banksia Gardens Community Services, after also helping him complete a Certificate III in Education Support and first aid training. “I’ve absolutely relished the experience I’ve had with Banksia and it means a lot to me to be able to make a difference in kids’ lives. Every day is completely different and bringing smiles to the kids’ faces keeps me motivated.” #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #training #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #resilience

Tiffany, who has an intellectual disability, #depression, #anxiety and #ADHD, says going to WISE changed her life. Her positive attitude stems from her appreciation in finding a job that she enjoys, working at Pizza Fresh @pizza_fresh_co after completing training via Interskills Training (RTO 6653), the training arm of WISE Employment. Throughout her journey with WISE, Tiffany highlighted that it’s the level of respect she has received that has made her feel more confident. “WISE looks at who you are, not what you are and they’ve helped me overcome many barriers.” #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #mentalhealth #mentalillness #intellectualdisability

Four years ago, Andrew experienced severe #anxiety and #depression, heightened by a stressful hospital work environment, a role he eventually had to give up. Despondent and convinced he’d never work again, Andrew spiralled downhill. Things looked up when he was referred to WISE Employment earlier this year. Andrew was impressed with the different approach and support he was offered. “WISE Employment was so easy to work with, they really listened to me and understood what I was comfortable with and what I wanted.” It wasn’t long before WISE had secured an interview for Andrew at a local motel for a cleaning position, something he was skilled at and keen to do. Andrew got the job! “This whole experience has been a massive change to my self-esteem and I’ve got such a positive outlook on life. The slightest thing used to send me off to a dark place, whereas now I can really see a future.” #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #mentalhealth #mentalillness

In his early 20s, Attila suffered drug-induced psychosis and was admitted to a psychiatric ward where his life went on a downward spiral. Now, over a decade later, Attila lives independently, has travelled the world and supports himself through employment at Clean Force Property Services, one of WISE Employment’s social enterprises, where he is one of Clean Force’s longest serving employees. “Joining Clean Force impacted my life immensely, if I didn’t have this job I don’t know what I would be doing. With my condition, this role and organisation has been perfect for me as they are so understanding and flexible around my health problems, I couldn’t have asked for better support.” #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #returntowork #mentalhealth #socent #socentAU #socialenterprise #socialenterprises #resilience

“I was in a merry-go-round with the court system and had one last chance before I would be locked up again. I didn’t want that to happen. Jo introduced me to WISE Employment, where I was able to do some courses that helped me enter society again.” Today, Luke works in the LNG (liquid natural gas) sector and is very passionate about supporting people living with drug and alcohol addiction. Luke is involved with Joseph’s Corner, a not-for-profit support service for families and friends living with drug and alcohol addiction. He’s grateful to have a secure job, a loving and supportive partner and is helping others find their way, explaining that WISE Employment gave him an opportunity to live a big and beautiful life.

Nick loves gardening, a passion he shares with his wife and a calming experience he commits to every fortnight with a cup of tea. Having an #intellectualdisability, #anxiety and #stress, it can be difficult for Nick to process information and sometimes make decisions; however that hasn’t stopped him from finding work in a role he enjoys. Nick works at his local Coles. “I work 57 hours a fortnight and have been a successful Coles team member for the past 12.5 years. I started as a face-up team member and over the years I’ve worked in different sections... I really like it.” #wise25 #inclusion #diversity #disabilityjobs #recruitment #DisabilityEmployment #DES #employmentservices #employment #disability #npau #endstigma #IDPwD #pwd #Coles #mentalhealth #mentalillness #returntowork

Over the last 30 years, Joe Graffam has worked at Deakin University in several senior roles while conducting research on community integration of people with a disability and has been involved in the development of key degree courses around disability studies. The plan to establish WISE Employment was introduced to Joe via a mutual contact in 1992. He was extremely interested and passionate about the work the organisation would be doing to integrate people with a disability into more meaningful employment. “I was approached by one of the founders to join the new Board, and it was an offer I couldn’t refuse because the WISE founder values aligned with mine, and the objective was to lead the way in this area. I knew I could bring in my research expertise to help.”

“When Catherine, who has an intellectual disability, joined WISE Employment Devonport four years ago, it was clear that all she wanted to do was work. With her specific skills and intellectual disability, we had to ensure that we approached the right employer,” said Karen, Catherine’s Employment Consultant. Catherine has since been working at Jac’s Accounting. Her job enabled her to travel to Launceston, Tasmania, somewhere she’d always wanted to go. After catching the travel bug, Catherine decided she would save up and go to New Zealand. In 2016, Catherine and her carer spent two weeks in New Zealand, which she describes as a truly magical experience. Read more about Catherine’s story on www.wiseemployment25.com.au
