with the trend for today’s artists under the ever so popular sub-genre of trap being; oversaturate the market with your art & aim for blog headlines, carti seems like a breath a fresh right before pressing play. lyrically anything playboi carti has to offer is pretty regressive for hip hop but sonically & artistically his music is shaking off a trope that plagues the sub-genre. like another artist i hold so dear, carti’s aesthetic is pretty fascinating. yes he’s riding the now cliche punk/emo aesthetic trap rappers have been dickriding to the max but unlike other artists, his music doesn’t over-correlate with that theme or better yet feature it to the point where there’s more to be desired. with his debut album, all of the punk photos on his instagram seemed like antics however on this record “r.i.p” literally serves as the sonic equivalent of the album cover where carti is photoshopped front flipping over a rock crowd that i’d think would drastically contradict his fans in real life. the atlanta native’s delivery is a hit or miss for most but once you get past the repetitive structure of his verses, i doubt any sustainable gripes will remain. melodic bangers like “no time”, “mileage”, & “fell in luv” provides an easy & overall blissful listening experience. while bangers like “rip fredo”, “r.i.p”, & “shoota” ultimately play the biggest part in this record eclipsing his impressive release from last year. “flatbed freestyle” is my favorite cut on here simply because it epitomizes his entire sound while his delivery rivals an early-2014 young thug. one of the most hard-hitting singles i heard this year is ruined by yet another daunting, garbage verse from nicki minaj, but luckily the song has a two minute run time prior to...that. what makes playboi carti a special artist to me is that he gives off the kind of vibe that he’s not taking himself too seriously while simultaneously maximizing his full potential as a trap artist......
