The Windfall~ Diksha Basu
This is a story about an Indian family who go through an intense change in lifestyle and the consequences of said change, after acquiring quite a bit of money. The story focuses on multiple characters with amazing ease and the third person narration helps with the juggle between characters.
I think as a South Asian (Bangladeshi) I could relate to multiple aspects of the social life/lifestyle. This is Basu’s second book, I came upon it at a thrift store and I am so glad I did. I will definitely pick up her other book as well! .
Rating: 8.5/10
Recommendation: Yes! .

Just received this today from @broadwaybooks and I can’t wait to start this. I know I am late to the party and all that but I also think that one mustn’t read all books when everyone is reading or talking about them. That’s just my personal opinion. I want the so-called euphoria to die down I suppose. But yeah “The Windfall” was sold to me SS humour and satire and family drama - all in Delhi. Wouldn’t want to miss it! .

This will be my first read of August 2018. I plan my reads, given the number of books I have to read and review. So yeah. Do any of you also plan reads weeks in advance? .

4.5/5✨✨✨✨Thank you @poeticsoulinme for sending your amazing self published poetry book Poems Cradled in the Horn by Edel Ahmed. It’s such a heartfelt and beautiful collection of poems that I really connected to especially Immigrant, Mango, Mother Tongue and When You Left Me You Didn’t Really Go. As someone who loves to read and collect poetry I would say Poems Cradled in the Horn is one of my favourites this year. It’s the type of book you just need to sit down and read through and feel the words come to life. Thank you again Edel for sharing your words I really enjoyed your beautiful poems.

For the past thirty years, Mr. and Mrs. Jha’s lives have been defined by cramped spaces, cut corners, gossipy neighbors, and the small dramas of stolen yoga pants and stale marriages. They thought they’d settled comfortably into their golden years, pleased with their son’s acceptance into an American business school. But then Mr. Jha comes into an enormous and unexpected sum of money, and moves his wife from their housing complex in East Delhi to the super-rich side of town, where he becomes eager to fit in as a man of status: skinny ties, hired guards, shoe-polishing machines, and all.

The move sets off a chain of events that rock their neighbors, their marriage, and their son, who is struggling to keep a lid on his romantic dilemmas and slipping grades, and brings unintended consequences, ultimately forcing the Jha family to reckon with what really matters.

Happy paperback publication day to this, the funniest and smartest novel to have come out of India in years. #thewindfall #dikshabasu #india #newindia #bookstagram #comedyofmanners #bloomsburypublishing #bloomsburyindia #paperback

When I was a kid I would spend hours at my local library, walking down each aisle, head cocked sideways as I read the spine of each book, deciding whether it was worth taking home.
I don’t get to the library as often as I used to, but nowadays I have social media to aid me.
Neither of these are new and I can’t believe I just discovered them. But thanks to folks on #instagram i have. And I can’t wait to dive in.

Mr. and Mrs. Jha’s lives have been defined by cramped spaces, cut corners, and small dramas that come from living in the same housing complex for the past thirty years. However, when Mr. Jha comes into a sudden and enormous fortune, he moves his wife from East Delhi to the rich side of town. This sets off a chain of events that rocks their neighbors, their marriage, and more.⠀

Hilarious and wise, “The Windfall” by Diksha Basu, is filled with warmth and charm, allowing an enlightened look at social status, pride, and the human drive to build and share a home.⠀

De l’humour et une jolie prose pour un aspect de la société indienne moderne que je n’avais pas encore perçu ;ou quand une famille de la classe moyenne fait fortune et sombre dans le snobisme . ..Bref , je recommande ! #roman#pauvresmillonaires#dikshabasu #livre#book#kindle#reading#india#inde#delhi#societe#iloveindia #reading#mercuredefrance

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I stayed up a little past my bedtime last night to finish this gem of a novel!
.
If you like Crazy Rich Asians you might like this (but don't expect them to be the same; The Windfall has a drier humor and a somewhat more familiar world than the obscene wealth of CRA).
.
Definitely take this one to the beach (I'm looking at you, @grantathompson).
.
Also ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to the ☀️for coming out today!!

Windfall is a humorous and interesting story of a Delhi family which rises from their East Delhi settlement into the echelons of upside Gurgaon (translation: rags to riches). It spells out a delightful tale of how money influences family and societal status in India and presents a non cringe-worthy picture of Indian stereotypes and idiosyncrasies! The characters are likeable and you'll adore the relatable references if you're an average middle-class Indian 🎈

The first half felt rather slow to me and I had to really struggle through owing to disconnected build-ups to various plot points but the second half won me over and I'd recommend this book if you're looking to read a funny book around family, society and 'fitting in' in the modern Indian context.

Which brings me to today's burning question for you🔥
📌: If you had a windfall gain and won a crazy lottery for 1 million dollars tonight - how would you use it?

Thank you @crownpublishing for the free copy of The Windfall by Diksha Basu. It’s on my summer tbr list I can’t wait to dive into it once I have more time. One of my goals this year is to have a diverse reading list from various world views and genres. It’s easy to stick to what you feel comfortable reading, but exploring new authors has widened my palate. Diksha Basu’s novel does exactly that with her readers as she takes them to on a journey alongside her characters entertaining banter, plot twists and fascinating life in New Delhi. It’s a novel you should dive into this summer if you’re looking for a fresh new perspective and entertaining story to add to your library. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

The paperback of one of the sharpest, funniest, most sensitive, subtle and wildly entertaining examinations of class I've seen in fiction in recent years. In shops in July! Isn't it just beautiful - and fresh, modern and cliché-free like the book. #thewindfall #dikshabasu #bookstagram #bloomsburypublishing #bloomsburyindia #paperback #newbooks #comedyofmanners #india #indiafiction

The Windfall by Diksha Basu is a rag to riches story of the Jha family—father, mother and a son who studies in America. The family’s lives have all been about cramped spaces and gossipy neighbors until Mr. Jha comes into an enormous amount of money and moved into an upscale neighborhood. I’ve heard it’s funny, and i’m particularly interested that it is in most parts set in India. •
I don’t know a lot about India but it’d be great to know more about the country. Speaking of which, do you watch Bollywood films? I have not watched a lot, in fact i’ve only watched two 🙈 but both I actually liked - 3 Idiots and Ghajini. If you watch Indian films, what could you recommend? 🎞
