My current process for digital painting/drawing is as follows:
*Step 1: The sketch phase -
This is where I try to get a rough idea of whatever it is I'm trying to depict, sometimes the image I have in my mind is unspecified and 'loose', in which case the blanks are filled in as I go. Often times I will start with a very rough sketch and later refine it on a new layer.
Step 2: Flat/Base Colour
This is where I lay in the mid-tones, in other words, the colours of the object/person without any light or shadow layed over it. In this particular piece I decided to go greyscale (black and white).
*Step 3: Light & Shadow
This is where I add some 3-dimensionality to the image by use of light and shadows, and the transitions between them. NOTE: This is also the step in which I cover up the lineart, if I am trying to create a lineless piece.
*Step 4: B&W to Colour
This step is only applicable if I started off the piece in greyscale. I make use of the softlight and overlay layers to execute this step. The image is then tweaked and refined as I wish.
