lol jk... 161.0 this morning and I was 166.8 at the start of this cut 4 weeks ago on day one - November 14th. Remember the paper towel (toilet paper roll) analogy. We will see visual progress much more quickly the leaner that we get. .

We also can’t spot reduce or choose where we lose the fat first. This is my 4th contest prep. In 2013, my first prep, everything was a surprise. I competed in 4 shows and had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know how I would look nor did I know how I would feel. The 2015 prep was coming off or surgery. I wasn’t sure if I would look worse or better than 2013. I ended up looking much better and won my natural bodybuilding pro card and my weight class in both shows that I entered. .

By now, I know what to expect. We’re taking a slower approach with a diet break but the end goal is the same. This portion is going to be very similar to the mini cut I did at the beginning of 2017. I know the order that I normally lose body fat. If you swipe left you’ll see that I lose back fat first, then the abs really start to come in by mid to upper 150’s, chest gets leaner and then for the next 15 lbs everything gets leaner and the quads and rest of the lower body finally gets lean around 140 lbs - ETA summer 2018. I’m not expecting big changes visually until 3 or 4 weeks from now, right in time for the LA Fit Expo. Patience is a virtue. .

This is right about the time where a lot of people would get too aggressive or quit altogether. Don’t do that! Make small adjustments if needed and be patient. Fat loss is relatively fast when you think of it in terms of weeks and not days. I’m consistent, I’ve started cardio and tanning (those glorious mood improving UV rays which I love during the winter). .

Inconsistent lighting on progress pics is annoying. I kind of wish I didn’t take this day one pic on such a bright, sunny morning lol. .

Macros are still 60 fat, 200 carbs and 175 protein on training days. Rest days the go is 70 fat, 150 carbs and 175 protein. Adherence has been more consist this week. Finally over this cold and training is back to 100% .

I used to find anything and everything to hide behind in pictures. Whether it was another person, a bag, or a drink. I was always looking for a way to disappear and look smaller. We all still want flattering pictures of ourselves at nice angles but when you are so uncomfortable in your skin that the idea of taking a picture gives you anxiety that’s a sad place to be. That feeling is one of the things I focused on as motivation while losing weight. It’s also a non-scale victory; being able to take a picture without looking for an escape. When looking for motivation focus on more than just wanting to lose weight. Remind yourself of all the reasons why you want it, from taking pictures comfortably to being able to buy clothes off the rack to doing active things like riding a roller coaster or an ATV. Do it because you love yourself.

I recently watched a TV show in which two of the main characters set out to lose weight by chugging homemade protein shakes. A few days later, they were shocked to find that they'd actually GAINED weight. Protein shakes are not automatically pro-weight loss. What you toss in there matters! Keep in mind that liquid calories are typically easier to ingest than solid foods. •
If you're trying to gain weight and build muscle, the left protein shake may be better suited for your needs. And for those of you trying to watch your calories, keep it lighter. •
To add: There's nothing magical about protein powder; it's simply a convenient source of protein. Many of you prefer to get your protein and calories from whole, minimally processed foods, and that's more than okay!

On Monday I hit a HUGE PR and milestone for myself of 365 lbs x 4. This was SUPER important to me because it was the indicator that I can finally hit 405 lbs on squats. 📍DRINK ALCOHOL AND STILL LOSE FAT (4 steps)📍

A lot of folks think of “drinking alcohol” and “losing weight” as an inverse relationship 📈📉. That is, the more alcohol they drink, the heavier they’ll be, and the only way to lose weight is to avoid drinking altogether.

While there’s some truth to this, it’s no different than consuming too much of anything (even healthy whole foods). Consume too many calories ⬆️ — taking you OUT of a calorie deficit — and you’ll not lose weight 🙅‍♂️

Now back to alcohol🍺 —> of course, the most most diet-friendly choice would be skipping alcohol all together. But for most people, that’s not a totally realistic request 😉

And the good news is that drinking won’t automatically derail your progress. If you’re able to control your total calories, then it's 100% possible to drink alcohol and still lose weight!

To help, here’s a four step plan I use for myself and my clients:

1️⃣ Focus on Veggies 🥗, Fruit 🍎, & Lean Meats 🍖 Earlier in the Day - this will help you stay full on fewer calories and ensure you get plenty of protein & micronutrients in before drinking.
– 
2️⃣ Stick to Low-Calorie Drinks - to get the most alcohol *bang* for your calorie *buck*, go with liquor (whiskey, vodka, tequila, etc.) on the rocks 🥃 or with a zero-cal mixer (diet soda, LaCroix, seltzer water, etc.)

3️⃣ Once You’re Drinking… STOP EATING 🤤❌🍔 - you see, It’s not usually alcohol that causes people to gain weight. Instead, it's the “drunk food” they’re shoveling down with it.

(sidenote: from my experience, the only time I’ve had a bad hangover is when I’m eating “drunk food” or drinking high-calorie/sugary cocktails 🍹)

4️⃣ Regardless of if you follow the steps above and control your drinking, or you say screw it and go straight Frank the Tank 🍺✊️, remember that you’re always just ONE HEALTHY CHOICE from being back on track ✅

💥GOOD CARBS / BAD CARBS💥

✅Let’s start by saying that contrary to what you might think, carbs are not the enemy. The enemy is calories. Too many calories. Carbs don’t necessarily always make you fat so there is literally no reason to avoid them (unless you’re on a no carb diet). But even then, eating things like rice, beans, potato’s and whole grain breads are wildly good for you.

🍞Carbs got a bad rap when all these low carb/no carb diets started hitting the scene many years ago. Truth is, you want carbs in your diet. You almost NEED them in your diet. Your brain alone required 130g of carbs per day to maintain healthy function. Getting these carbs from a good source is key to living a healthy lifestyle and helping you lose weight. -
🥨Now, this isn’t to say that diets like Keto are bad for you. They’re not! But don’t rely on low/no carb diets as the only way to lose weight or get healthy. Yes, it’s a great option. But so is just eating less calories. Maintaining a calorie deficit will do the same thing as the Keto Diet and you can still enjoy carbs!! -
🍪Oh and those carb sources on the right... avoid those. Ok don’t 100% avoid them. By all means indulge a bit! You’ve earned it. Just cut back on those. And if you eat a whole sleeve of Chips Ahoy... well, we won’t tell anyone ;)

Ohhhh it’s another post about how magical bcaa’s are isn’t it???
