The headlines aren’t always as they read. When Damien Hirst announced the sale of his diamond-studded skull, “For the Love of God,” headlines roared of it being the most expensive new work of art to ever sell. At nearly $100 million, that certainly would’ve been the case. That is, if it were all true. Once the hype cooled down, controversy began to surface. For one, the work was reportedly sold to an anonymous consortium, which may have included Hirst himself. Many even believe that the work never sold in the first place and it was a marketing ploy to bump his prices up across the board.
