The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a public holiday in Mexico. It begins October 31 and runs for three days until November 2. The holiday commemorates family and friends who have died, and typically involves gatherings of remembrance with a focus on the dead's spiritual journey. It is likely the most depicted holiday all over Puerto Vallarta, in every medium, and the depictions appear more celebratory than reverential. This is one example, but nearly every shop that sells art or tourism memorabilia has many skeletons, which seem to be the most frequent style of commemoration. Most of the imagery appears conical, like this one, and skeletons, large and small, appear as statues or fill shopkeepers shelves.
