I guess a proper update has been in order. Eleven days ago I had my chest catheter placed and fistula surgery on my left arm. Ten days ago I started dialysis. I’m not sure why I haven’t posted. Maybe trying to acclimate myself or maybe not wanting this to be real. It most certainly is though. I go to dialysis 3x per week for 3.5hrs each time. My start time is 3:30am because that’s the only time available. I have requested normal hours but for now this is the reality. Otherwise I’ll have to change doctors again and I don’t want to do that. My doctor is very nice and I trust him. So on dialysis days I get into bed at 10pm, I try to sleep. Usually I sleep 2-4hrs and I get up at 2:45am. By 3:30am I am at dialysis. My center is good. I like the people that work here. There are 2 nurses, and 3 techs. There are about 10 of us. The machines are going. The first 2x I just sat here in terror and shock. I listened as the blood goes in and out. The machines sound like ventilators and it’s a distinct sound I will never forget. They are loud. The main nurse plays music on this side of the room and I like that. Most people sleep but I can’t sleep here. I like to stay alert. My first few sessions rocked me. I slept for 18hrs, couldn’t eat, had nausea, vomiting, and I was like man please tell me it won’t be like this forever. I held my mom’s hand and cried. I asked her if I was going to be okay? Sometimes I sit here like how did I get here? And I remember oh yeah, type one diabetes non-compliance. And yeah I was young...but as the years went by I was 17,20, 25, 28,31-people like to tell me “you were young.” It’s like I wasn’t young that entire time. Let’s get real. Maybe you want to tell me that because you can see my shame and guilt. But that’s mine to deal with. And I will slowly, on my terms. So I’m here. I’m alive and I am happy for that. I am here to tell you type one diabetes caused my kidneys to fail and now I need a new one. The hope is you will see and hear all this and make different choices. I believe it’s never to late to change, to turn your life around. So let my lesson be a lesson to you. I am feeling a little better now. I am still waiting for UCLA to...continued

I had a 9 month check up with my eye doctor yesterday. After my last appt she noticed some blood vessel bleeding and wanted a follow up. Good news, she barely saw any issues and gave me a pass for a year 👍. I recently started wearing contacts too. The only reason was, so I could wear cool shades when I ride my bike 😆. #t1d #typeone #ilivewithdiabetes #diabetescomplications

Do you know what you’re grateful for? I mean what are you truly grateful for? Do you think about other people and what they are going through? Are you compassionate? Are you a good friend?
.
.
I have been for many weeks thinking about showers and how I am grateful for showers. Not only the fact that I have one and that I have water (many people don’t) but the fact that I can wash my own hair. Some people are completely dependent on others due to their circumstances. Does it take chronic illness to become grateful? I mean honestly I never thought about showers the way I do now until I found out that soon I wouldn’t be able to shower any more, well not like this anyway. Once that chest catheter is placed I can’t get any water near it or I will risk infection and possibly death. Isn’t that crazy? .
.
Are you grateful you only have diabetes? And that it’s manageable? That we have tools and gadgets today? Some people can’t even pay for their insulin. Are you grateful? Do you take your body for granted? Do you take for granted the things you don’t know shit about? Like how the kidneys filter out toxins so you can live? Do you have a glucose meter and often don’t use it? Do you skip taking insulin on purpose? Do you know some people would do anything to trade places with you? Do you know complications are complicated? Do you value your life? Do you know that possibly if you did have diabetes complications you may think diabetes wasn’t that bad after all? What is this post really about? I guess you’ll have to decided. I am enjoying my 2nd to last shower before surgery.

If you are a diabetic and fell burned out I do understand. But what I understand even more is that taking care of yourself is SO important and it is doable. And that there may be a day where you can’t go backwards. That you can’t change what you have done. I promise you can do it. Each day you wake up is a day where you can turn your life around. I hope you do. If you have questions please know despite what I am dealing with my DM is always open. What are you grateful for?

Yesterday I enjoyed the bright spots- my friend drove an hour to see me and drove us all around, we had good food, talked about life, and shopped. I kept up with all the walking and didn’t feel sick until the end of the day. I enjoyed the sun and the fact I am still free. I ignored the fact that all of the sudden I can see blood in my good eye and will have to see my eye doctor ASAP this coming week. There were many bright spots.
.
.
Free from the machines that will keep me alive for a few more days I realize now I took my kidneys for granted. I realize how amazing our bodies are and what they do for us. Surgery #1 for my first fistula and chest catheter starts bright and early Wednesday am. I’m a little apprehensive about the 8 hour fast as I experience a lot more lows and unpredictable blood sugars now that I only have 13% kidney function left. Dialysis starts next week as well either on Wednesday or Thursday. This is only temporary. This is a stepping stone. This too shall pass. The sooner I do this the sooner I can move on from all of it. It will be an adjustment. It’s like a quote someone once handed me- “ everything will be okay in the end, if it’s not okay it’s not the end.” ~Anonymous .
. Thank you so much to the people that support my journey. Both in person and on instagram. I appreciate you and I don’t forget the people that have been there during this not so great time in my life. Love you all. 💙💚

HIV in our country has often been considered as taboo & not discussed openly. .
.
A lot of patients shy away from admitting about it. However, it’s essential for a doctor to be aware of the entire medical history before treating a patient. .
.
Talking about the same in today’s video. .

My journey with #neuropathy these last 7 months has not been easy but I just had such a good check up with my neurologist. For the first time in months, we aren’t changing my meds. We think they are working and it will just take time for things to stabilize. I am so thankful for my healthcare team and for these rare smooth moments. Working hard on seeing the #glasshalffull and tapping into my joy. Joy in Him. #sotd #t1dlookslikeme #t1d #mydiabeticlife #diabetescomplications

While we know that nutrition and exercise are vital to #reversingdiabetes it is vital to give attention to the other lifestyle issues that are every bit as important. Are you in a relationship but lonely? This is not uncommon in #diabetes or #prediabetes when fatigue, worry, body discomfort and sexual dysfunction are very common among those with it. Diabetes is the leading cause of sexual dysfunction due to damage to nerves and blood vessels. But it can be difficult to talk to a partner and the downhill spiral in terms of emotional and physical health are huge. Watch my interview with psychosexual therapist Trish Murphy in my private Facebook group Avoid or reverse type 2 diabetes naturally where she share great tips on how to get beyond those challenges. Recently published in The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology: CYSTATIN C IS A MORE RELIABLE BIOMARKER FOR DETERMINING eGFR TO SUPPORT DRUG DEVELOPMENT STUDIES. While increased accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of cystatin C compared with creatinine to estimate GFR is valuable in clinical research, the main driver for increased use of cystatin C has been its role as a predictor of outcomes of decreased GFR, including risk of death and cardiovascular disease. #diabetes #diabetic #fatty #fattyliver #triglycerides #clinicaltrials #screening #screenings #trials #fibroscan #research #researchcenter #cholesterol #cholestrol #highbloodpressure #bloodpressure #highcholesterol #hightriglycerides #type2diabetes #diabetestype2 #diabetesawareness #diabetesproblems #diabetescommunity #diabetescomplications #freeclinic #freetesting #insulin #lantus #novalogo #novaline
