The fog lifted over the spine of Devil’s Ladder, bringing with it the eerie silence which infects the body like a virus. Her mind became floored in the chaos of her thoughts. She had never heard them shout so. It felt like a spontaneous jump into a freezing river, a moment that shocked her body into a purely instinctual mode. But the sun still had its say, and gently emerged from behind the grey curtains. Up here, freezing and drenched to the socks, the sun meant more. It’s warmth was felt more keenly. And though she had never been very religious, she knew why her ancestors held these peaks to be sacred. Like a devoted follower in the pews, she felt in the presence of something beyond her existence in those mountains. And only for a moment, she forgot about the required descent back into reality. But the moment, the silence, and the feeling lasted a lifetime.
