Completed Irelands highest mountain last Saturday.
Carrauntoohil in the south west of Ireland, in county kerry.
1038m high and I climbed 894m of that as cronins yard (starting point) is 144m above sea level itself.
Broke the bank with this one, flight to Shannon, in West Ireland, being £8 there and £10 back.
Didn't know whether Saturday or Sunday would be better. Saturday was pure rain and Sunday not, but i said I'd go and have a look of it on the sat and if not poss then Sunday it is.
Trouble is, I'd forgotten my waterproof trousers which were still having mud wiped off them from the brecons. Luckily though they sold them at cronins yard, not that anything stayed dry under any of the waterproofs anyway lol.
So, it got owned on the Saturday, it was none stop rain all day. Apart from on and off devil's ladder which was weird. Not that that mattered because of all the rain coming from the summit meant the devil's ladder was scrambling in waterfalls. I loved it. It was wet but not cold.
It was pure cloud after the ladder to the summit. Gotta admit I've never been whipped by rain before. That wind/rain combo was proper hardcore.
Only fell over once (which I'm pretty shocked about with the conditions and having to jump rocks over an overflowing river etc) jumping off the stones on the base of the cross, and landing on my arse. Smacked my knee which led to some calf cramp towards the end. Unless it's just coz I'm getting old.
The rain trashed the front and rear cameras of my phone. It's supposed to be waterproof but is a few years old. Due an upgrade anyway but I didn't care it broke, I was and still am buzzing from this experience, scrambling up and down devil's ladder with my hands grounded me and a half.
I had my camera with me, which withstood the rain more, even though not waterproof. Rain did get on the lense near the end though, leading to some distorted faces, entertaining my walk. I've stuck my phone in rice since and seems to be better #ish
It's starting to become a running joke that I'm doing this for the views. I saw a postcard after I was done and was like, no way, is that what I climbed lol #couldntseeanything
