The last deal of Avila’s beginning of December sign fest is Mike Fiers. The World Series winner is coming off of a down year, but the tigers still signed him to a major league deal.
The question is... was this a good or bad deal and how will it affect the tigers bid for Chris Tillman?
This was a quality signing from Avila. Fiers has been a relatively solid starter for the past four years. The deal didn’t break the bank, and with the spacious Comerica Park, a change of scenery may help him. He strikes out a solid 8.6 per 9, but last year his walk rate and home run rate went up last year. There wasn’t any injuries or such that contributed to his struggles, so let’s hope it was just an off year. I think there’s a real possibility it was just that, and if it is. The tigers can try and trade him at the deadline. But if he doesn’t, he will still be a good innings eater... something we will need lots of. So in conclusion, I think this is a solid deal. However, I still believe Tillman would have been a better signing. In my opinion he has more upside. His off year makes more sense because of his injury. Also, because of his age (29) other teams will value him better when it comes time to trade him. On the bright side, Jason Beck reported today that Avila is still considering bringing in another starter. That starter will most likely be another bounce back candidate according to Beck. This gives us hope that Tillman is still a possibility, as he completely fits that description. So even with the acquisition of Fiers, a Tillman deal is still very much on the table and wanted from me. Here is my opinion... what is yours?? Answer in the comments. Remember to let your opinion be heard!!
