Except for my high school and middle school days, I've always been someone who ran in the mornings. It means I always get my run in. My day goes better, I'm nicer to be around (a LOT nicer to be around), and there's something special about the roads with no one on them.

As my days get busier, I'm moving back to that and it feels so good. I also feel like it's not such a hard transition with reduced mileage. I'm not sure I would have been so zen about a high mileage transition to early morning. There is something just a little bit liberating about being in PT.

I've been going through some big personal changes recently and several people have suggested meditation to help with reflection. I've always felt that running filled that space for me. I don't sit still very well and only when my body is on the natural autopilot of running cadence does my mind really relax and make room for some thoughts that need to form. After a week of dialing in on my diet, fitness, and overall well-being, I've seen... Tremendous progress!!! Jk. That's not real life. What I have noticed is that I feel a little bit better day to day and my body rhythms are starting to normalize. For me, this is pretty big. In other areas (abs 🙄...) progress is a little slower. That's to be expected, though. To truly take care of your body and get amazing results, you have to be ready to put in a lot of time and a LOT of effort

I had a little bit of a scare last night. I've had a very minor pain in my right heel that comes and goes over the past couple months. Yesterday while doing my tempo run, I had to take a quick break and when I started up again it felt like the bottom of my foot was on fire. I stopped immediately, took an ice bath at home, and worried myself sick all night.
This morning I did a test warm up and, after no pain, was able to do a relaxed 5 miles pain free. I'm insanely relieved. I've worked hard to get into race shape and be back at this level of fitness. My plan is to do 2 weeks of "active recovery-" no speed work and slightly less running augmented with extra low impact cardio training.

I signed up for this series the other day and I'm SUPER excited. This is a monthly 5k hosted by Hanson's in Utica. There are a couple reasons I love 5ks: they're fun, a good temperature check for longer races, much easier to recover from than a longer race, and just about anyone can do a 5k- even if you don't run the whole thing!

Yesterday may have had me down and out, but today the sun is shining, my stomach isn't hurting, and I'm giving it another go..... With mile repeats.... 🙄😅

Like I said, I have 2 months til my first big race in years and I want to make them really count. I'm sick of feeling like I'm in decent shape, but not amazing. I'm taking the next 2 months to focus on doing everything on my training plan, focus on my diet, and perfecting my running. If not now, when?

I was going to post something inane about a nice, easy night run, but then I realized something important. About 7 years ago I finished my very first 10k in 51 minutes. Tonight, my "easy" run was 3 minutes faster than that race. You always have more potential than you think you do.
