On this date in 1994: gay filmmaker, painter and stage director Derek Jarman dies of AIDS at the age of 52. Jarman, who was diagnosed in 1986, publicly discussed his infection to raise awareness about the disease. He was an early music video director, working with Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths, The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith and others. Jarman’s final film, “Blue”, addressed Jarman’s vision impairment and declining health due to his battle with AIDS and is largely considered to be a poetic statement against the AIDS epidemic.
