IBIS AND JAQUEL SCENE - SEASON 1 AMERICAN GODS
This was one of my favourite scenes I shot from Season 1. It was the first stand alone scene our second unit did, from top to bottom, that had more than two members of the principal cast.
I think the final look and direction of this scene gave the studio the confidence to trust our ‘little’ second unit with more and more heavy lifting as the season progressed.
Shortly after we were up to 4 or 5 days a week, often shooting full scenes and/or doing re-shoots (our show runners were very demanding both visually and aesthetically. If the dailies didn’t match their expectations they had no compunction calling for a re-shoot.) This set was beautifully designed by @rory_cheyne1 and meticulously decorated @jarodick. The first time we shot there was a night scene and I used 4xS60 sky panels through a soft box overhead for the wide shots, dimmed down to almost nothing. For close ups I filled under eyes with a celeb or S60 through 129 or magic cloth.
For the day scenes the overhead sky panels switched to 5600K and brightened for a base daytime fill. I had M90s on lifts through the windows as needed. The translights were lit by kinos (if memory serves). As with all scenes on stage we had the SFX team lay in a touch of haze to soften the image.
On second unit we carried two full camera teams/packages, as well as our own full G and E trucks.
What a ride!
