Who hasn't at some point in their life done thousands upon thousands of sit-ups / crunches in hope of having a sculpted midsection?
.
I remember when I was younger at 🥋karate school, the warm-up at the start of every class was 100 sit-ups and planks till you puked 🤢lol.
Ain't going to lie, as much as I don't think it was functional to do that back then, it definitely was a character builder, to push past the pain and keep going 😤 #feeltheburn
.
However, as you grow older, have injuries and more experience in this life, you realize that pushing through bad form and poor exercise programming is a silly idea! 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏼‍♀️
.
Especially if you suffer from back pain, this exercise does nothing but compress your lumbar spine
.
This exercise according to some studies can cause hundreds of pounds of compression on the discs of your spine, and the repeated bending can potentially herniate your discs
.
To fully understand why this is a bad exercise, let's have a look at the function of the abs!
.
Common misconception out there is that people think ❌the function of the abs is to flex the lumbar spine ✅when really the abs mainly contract eccentrically in functional movement to DECELERATE extension of the spine in the sagittal plane
.
There is never a point in time in functional movement that your abs are asked to contract CONSCIOUSLY. Your core is meant to react to movement SUBCONSCIOUSLY as you go through life
.
That is why the crunch doesn't make sense as an exercise functionally because not only does it crush your spine, your body is never asked to do such a movement consciously
.
So if your goals are more functional than aesthetic, there is much better options out there that will not only get you looking shredded, but will also make you move like a ninja!!! 🔪

I am SO in love with this book I found at the #thetechmuseum in San Jose this weekend!!! There's so much information in this book. ❤️ Love Love Love! The museum is really awesome too. There is a huge dome IMAX there also. I got to see The National Parks Adventure. Its breathtaking. Such an amazing place to visit when your out in the downtown area. 🤓 #delavier

WHAT KNEE TYPE ARE YOU?!

When doing activities such as 🏋🏻squats or running, 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻 it's often recommended for you to know which knee type you are
.
Generally the ranking from safest to worst is
1️⃣Neutral alignment > 2️⃣Bow legged > 3️⃣Knocked knees > 4️⃣Hyperextended knees
.
Some people don't grasp the idea that static posture at rest actually does affect how a person moves. Posture dictates function and vice versa as well
.
If you stack the joints better in neutral, you will be able to start your movement from a much more mechanically advantageous position and in turn perform much better at whatever movement you're trying to accomplish 🏄🏻
.
Also to clarify, "neutral posture" is just a point in time that happens to be at the centre of one's Maximal ROM. If you start "off centre" you cut your body's ability to access better mobility and more power (more on that later)
.
Imagine if you're squatting, can you agree that loading your body with your knees caving inwards (3️⃣) is a bad idea? ☹️ This not only overloads your Medial Ligaments (MCL), but also causes friction in your Lateral structures. (Lateral condyles femur/tibia + meniscus)
.
And if you're loading your body with your knees hyperextended(4️⃣), you run the risk of pinching your meniscus, of tearing all your posterior knee ligaments / tendons of your lower leg, and of also developing arthritis😔
.
So how do you get neutral alignment? It's such a hard question to answer on IG, because there is an insane amount of different reasons why someone knees might not be aligned
.
It could be they have weak glutes and poor hip control, could be they have no hip or ankle mobility, it could be that their talus bone is internal rotated and causing their knee to collapse in... I mean the possibilities are endless. I will attempt to give you guys solutions though on 🎥YouTube (vinnierehab) this year so follow me there for a lot of free content soon

The illustrations are great and really deepen the understanding of anatomy, form, and musculature.
It's easy to 'workout' the wrong muscles, overload the joints, or lift too heavy while sacrificing form (which could lead to injury...no bueno).

Always worth to take a look in this great book. My former sergeant at the military inspired me to buy my first delavier.
It was a great time back then. I learned a lot about training, bodybuilding and motivation.
