As winter comes near, my mind drifts to the mountains of Slovakia. I’ve spent the last three Christmas’s overseas and each time I traveled to the a Tatras. These beautiful and challenging peaks are so accessible and make it easy for everyone to enjoy the wilderness. I’m saddened that this year will be the first time I don’t hike those trails, drink tea in those chalets, and spend time among those trees.
I also am saddened as I listen to reports that these forests are under threat. Greed has led to these forests being sold off and logged. The habitat of bears, wolves, and lynx is being destroyed. Some say they’re protecting the forest from beetles and disease. But it’s merely a front to a racket making a few people rich. I encourage anyone interested in learning more to google My Sme Les and VLK two groups working tirelessly to protect the forest.
And If you’re looking for a mountain getaway, try out the High Tatras. Spend money locally here and spread the word about this amazing place to that it will be protected for generations to come.
