When I was a kid, my whole life revolved around #HipHop. I’d ride my bike to the mall to buy all of the latest releases on cassette, subscribed to The Source magazine, and studied all aspects of hip-hop music and culture. I’d listen to my cassette tapes and read and study the liner notes in the cassette pullout. I had over 1,000 tapes, all alphabetically organized, including music from one of my favorite rappers at the time - #DefJef. His first album was “Just a Poet with Soul,” and all throughout the album he made references to him being a poet, which greatly influenced me in becoming a poet myself. When he released his 2nd ablum, “Soul Food,” he joined a new record label, “Delicious Vinyl,” which already had the likes of #YoungMC and #ToneLoc and is also known for having #ThePharcyde
The inside of the cassette had an order form to purchase a #DeliciousVinyl shirt, featuring their iconic logo. I bought one, and when it came to my house, I wore it to school and everyone was asking me where I got it. It was my favorite shirt.
Fast forward about 23 years, and I’m driving down W Adams Blvd. in Los Angeles, on my way to @Gallery38 to see the wall that I will be turning into a mural for The @WorldPeaceMuralTour ….. and what do I see? A big sign on top of a building with the Delicious Vinyl logo, except now the logo features a man eating a pizza pie instead of a vinyl record. I was like, “Whatttt!!! Is this what I think it is? A pizza place owned by the guys from Delicious Vinyl?.....Called Delicious Pizza???” I parked and went inside, and sure enough, that is EXACTLY what it was, and the walls were covered in memorabilia from rappers on the Delicious Vinyl label. They even had a framed copy of the “Soul Food” record by Def Jef.
A few days later, I did the mural, and my old friend @souleyemusic came by to say hello. He’s a rap artist too. We first met in Florida, and now he lives here in LA. He asked if I’d like a slice from across the street, and of course I said, “Yes!” He came back with the slice, I took a break from writing #WorldPeace to take a bite of it, and I felt the rush as everything came full circle.
