That time dad showed us how to respect SMÍEŦ properly. In my 31 yrs, this was my 1st time skinning & sectioning wild game- it took a lot of mental prep to get here. Despite having the appropriate teachings, I could never bring myself to handle SMÍEŦ & remove his beloved hide, hooves & antlers. If I had attempted this before I was ready, my sadness & guilt might have seeped into the meat. SMÍEŦ gave his life so we could eat, the least we can do is honour this animal in a way that sits right within our own spirit. This experience was empowering; traditionally, women were responsible for food preparation, storage, & budgeting, I consider this a personal reclamation of self, of Female Indigenaety & self-determination. Gratitude y'all!
*We received this deer as part of a cull on a nearby island, I'm hoping to take the next step toward hunting soon, I still have work to do*
