We love a cute cartoon, and even more so, a cartoon of a ridiculously cute octopus! Makes getting to the weekend a fraction easier.... In fact, the broad family of umbrella octopuses includes both the dumbo octopuses (13 species recognised in this group) named for their ear-like fins, and the flapjack octopus (which you might know as the critter that was nearly called Opisthoteuthis adorabilis). Species of dumbo octopus (like this cartoon) are extremely deep-dwelling and having been found off the coasts of the USA (California, Oregon), Azores, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries, scientists reckon they're found worldwide.
You should definitely check out the video from @nautiluslive to see a dumbo octopus in action 😍
Regrann from @undertheseastories - One of the cutest deep sea creatures out there😍. Do you know what it is? .
All species of this bizarre animal live at least 3000 meters deep and some even 7000 below sea level! They are one of the deepest living creatures! It uses its ear-like fins by flapping them in order to propel themselves usually just above ocean floor, which is still very poorly known to us, searching for crustaceans and worms to prey on. #illustration #deepsea - #regrann
