🙏🏽Facilitated by two Monks from the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery #earthday🌎 pilgrims shared their reverence with the earth by bringing their bodies into direct contact with the ground. A joyful act of repentance. An exercise in bowing as a "thank you" to all that serves us. 🍃In all this talk about caring for the planet, how often do we lay or bodies alongside hers? #spiritualecology #deepecology #mttamalpais #bowing

ECOLITERACY PROJECT, DAY 27: 'PERMACULTURE'
-

Permaculture ("permanent" + "(agri)culture") is a design science that aims to create resilient and regenerative systems by mimicking patterns found in nature.
-
The design process is guided by a set of ecologically conscious principles and ethics that prioritize working *with* rather than against the natural rhythms of any given system.
-
The ultimate goal of a permaculture design is to set in motion a self-sustaining system that needs little or no external inputs, produces no waste that cannot be repurposed, requires a minimum of upkeep by its human stewards, and yields abundant resources not just for the people but for all living elements.
-
Permaculture's most elegant application is in the home garden, where a practitioner will devise systems, for example, to use the waste from one component to fuel the next. A permaculture homesteader might feed her kitchen scraps to her flock of free-ranging chickens, who will in turn produce fresh eggs that she can take back to the kitchen to eat-- this is a simple closed loop, as contrasted with the wasteful conventional paradigm of putting your food scraps on a truck to be hauled out to a landfill on the edge of town, while you buy eggs at the supermarket that were produced months ago, thousands of miles away. -
But to say that permaculture is simply "eco-friendly gardening" is to miss the deeper cultural critique that informs *why* we practice this method of design. It was developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the late '70s as a response to the myriad environmental crises we were just beginning to wake up to at that time, so it comes imbued with a moral imperative to take meaningful action at the grassroots level to heal our landscapes and reorganize our lifestyles.
-
Noted permaculture practitioner Larry Santoyo tells us that permaculture isn't something you do -- it's something you apply to whatever it is that you do. The principles of permaculture design may be most easily applied to the garden, but they also have the potential to transform our approach to urban planning, engineering, politics, finances and beyond.

I've always felt strange talking about how much I "love nature". It's always felt redundant or presumed. Saying I love nature feels akin to saying I love air or water...Things that literally make up the composition of our bodies. So no, I don't "love nature", I am it and it is me. -
We are part of a complex web where every action we take has a reaction, every purchase or production of waste has a ripple effect that reaches so much further than we can imagine. The sooner we take responsibility for our presence on this Earth, the sooner we will find peace and maybe one day even mutualism. Let's start by contacting @usinterior Secretary Zinke today at 202-207-6416 and let him know how much public lands mean to us! The environment needs defending now more than ever, let's #keepitpublic

California in the 22nd century: A vision and a plan for sustainability and surplus. After the successful progression past petrol-based energy and with the new ability to desalinate ocean water on an industrial scale, Californians begin to reestablish long-broken habitat systems, creating food sheds of wild resources that support a population of over 80 million people. A warm stroll through the grasslands. It was a blissful way to spend "Family Day." 🐢🌾
It also reminded me just how nurturing and patient the land is. Everything we've ever had came from her (or him, or it) and that's wildly spiritual to me. Perhaps this is what I (we) can offer this little guy when it comes to questions of where we came from or where we are going to and he can fill in the rest. Thank you @echofarms for the pic📸

Carl Jung was deeply concerned about our loss of connection to Nature and that was over 50 years ago! He considered a life lived in close contact with Nature to be "nourishing soil of the soul." He believes we should all strive to live "in modest harmony with Nature. "

477 gallons of water are required to produce 1 pound of eggs; almost 900 are needed for 1 pound of cheese; 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef; 1,000 gallons of water are required to produce 1 gallon of milk (source: Cowspiracy). Looks like a plant based diet saves a whole lot of water too... And they said there was a drought? 🤔#whatdrought #cowspiracy #vegan #peta @peta @peta2 @vegan

Our research has shown that it is the combination of rock dust + compost that creates the best crop yields. Keep that in mind as you're preparing your gardens and farms for planting! ECOLITERACY PROJECT, DAY 26: 'HORTICULTURE'
-

Horticulture refers to the art, science, and practice of cultivating a garden.
-
Horticulture differs from agriculture (see Day 22) in that it favors the small-scale cultivation of a mixed variety of crops, both annual and perennial, from various successional stages (see Day 5).
-

Agriculture is the practice of "tending the field" rather than "tending the garden," and thus emphasizes early successional states, low diversity and monocropping. Horticulture promotes maximum diversity by working with a system's natural successional patterns, rather than fighting against them.
-
Some anthropologists assert that human cultures, over time, naturally progress from hunter-gatherers to horticulturalists before eventually settling as agriculturalists -- obviously the "apex" of civilization, right?
-
Well, I contend (alongside Peter Bauer and the late Toby Hemenway) that this continuum is false -- yet another example of our oversized Western imperialist ego. This is how *we* do it, so it must be the best! Now let's impose it upon the world!
-
The fact is that the lifeways of a horticulturalist society are far more sustainable than our current paradigm of exploitative agriculture. Horticulture fits neatly in both "wild" and "domesticated" places, while agriculture requires us to eradicate entire ecosystems so that we may dominate the landscape.
-
Horticulture, as opposed to agriculture, is compatible with our emerging understanding of "traditional ecological knowledge" of maintaining a low impact on our surroundings, which has nearly gone extinct along with the indigenous peoples of the world. There are ways of "tending the wild" that allow those spaces to flourish while at the same time providing for our needs -- but it's up to us to discover and reclaim them. Horticulture offers us an entry point.
-
Please LIKE and SHARE if you believe that ecological awareness is critical to humanity's hope of developing a sustainable and resilient future for ourselves.

Approximately 90 million of the United States' 120 million acres of arable, farmable land is used for growing animal feed. Over 70 billion land animals are killed each year in the U.S. alone. This figure doesn't include fish and other marine animals, as their death toll is so great that it is measured in tons.
Homo sapiens (modern humans) have been alive on Earth for 100,000 to 200,000 years. Fossil evidence shows ancient and early ancestral, primitive humans lived over millions of years ago. Chimpanzees share about 98% of the same DNA and genetic code with humans. Humans (Homo sapiens), primitive ancestral human-like species, and chimpanzees (plus all monkeys, apes, and primates) all share a distant common ancestor from which they all descended. Primates are over 55 million years old, so our recent common ancestor with the primate group lived some time even before then. One step further: humans, our ancestors, primates, and ALL mammals share a most recent common ancestor, or last common ancestor or descendant, from which humans and all types of mammals, including those extinct and those still extant and seen around today, directly descended or evolved from. Geological time and numbers don't lie (and neither does fossil record data from a 4.5 billion year old Earth rock floating in space).

"As we help bring into being the symbols that can heal and nourish the soul of the world, we begin to live this responsibility. We take our roles as guardians of the planet, and we do so with the consciousness of oneness that includes and connects the sacred and the mundane, the inner and the outer, spirit and matter, the world's soul and body and our own, the individual and the planet."

I was riding under a very ordinary concrete bride and happened to look up and there is this piece of mosaic art! About 12"X12". I can't help but wonder who put it there. Thank you. • "Whenever you are immersed in compulsive thinking, you are avoiding what is. You don't want to be where you are. Here, Now" •

Amazing fallen over apple tree blooming big again this year! Last year it produced 400 Apples = 10 gallons of triple cold filtered cinimon-coconut apple juice. So excited for this year!
This tree fell over in 2012 ice storm so I jacked it up with my car jack and put some rocks under it and kept pruning it so it could make a comeback! Bounced back better than I ever could imagined!
