¿Cómo puede el estrés producir ganancia de peso?

Antes de que el ser humano evolucionara a la vida en sociedad, el cortisol nos daba un empuje de energía para ayudarnos a huir ante el peligro, interpretado químicamente como estrés. Ahora, sin embargo, es raro ver que alguien huya literalmente de sus problemas, así que esa dosis de energía queda almacenada, y continuamos viviendo en ciclos de estrés que parecen no tener fin.
Cuando entramos en un ciclo constante de liberación de cortisol, nuestro cuerpo genera tres tipos de respuestas, las cuales pueden explicar cómo se da la ganancia de peso por estrés:

El cortisol hace que las células respondan menos a los impulsos de otras. Así pues, en la diabetes tipo 2 el cuerpo produce insulina, pero las células no responden a su señal. Esto se llama resistencia a la insulina, y hace que que el cuerpo no pueda liberar grasa de las células normalmente.
El cortisol promueve la inflamación, debido a que hace que el cuerpo almacene mayor cantidad de grasa visceral, que es la que está alrededor de los órganos y no podemos tocar. La grasa visceral es distinta a la grasa subcutánea (la que está bajo la piel, y podemos palpar), y es considerada más peligrosa, pues genera respuestas inflamatorias en distintas partes del cuerpo.
Por último, el cortisol puede afectar los niveles de las hormonas del apetito, como la leptina o la ghrelina, haciéndonos comer más de la cuenta y a cualquier hora. ¿Cómo corregir los niveles de cortisol?

Cada cual tiene métodos distintos para remediar el estrés. En tanto para algunas personas es bastante efectivo hacer actividades como leer o ver una película, para otros dar un paseo o realizar actividades físicas funciona mejor. Otro aspecto que se debe cuidar es dar descanso a nuestra mente, regulando las horas de sueño o meditando.

Exhausted right now from finals, work, school and all the things that I have planned for my life but here's the thing. You can either come up with an excuse for why you didn't put in the work, or you can just put in the work. When I walked into the gym I felt shitty, dooming my workout to be awful but when that music went on and the first couple warm up sets went down there was no option left but to give 110% cause you're already there, you might as well put in the work. It's like going to a grocery store and only buying 60% of the groceries you need, what the fuck was the point?
Just food for thought.
