Was with the celebrated Norwegian pianist @leifoveandsnes today at a live webcast from @steinwayandsons. He was warming up playing music by Claude Debussy, one of his favorite composers. You’re hearing a little of a piece called “Jardins sous la pluie” (Gardens in the Rain), from “Estampes” (Prints) —remember, he’s just warming up. No other composer rivaled Debussy—often called a musical impressionist— for painting with sound, and all of his music is full of light and shadow and color. Asked to recommend a good first recording to explore Debussy’s piano music, Leif Ove picked Arturo Benedetti Michaelangeli playing Debussy’s first book of Préludes on Deutsche Grammophon (swipe for album cover image; DM for Spotify link).
