Playing to your strengths is a great way to build your confidence in living a low waste or zero waste lifestyle. It lets you enjoy ‘winning’ at a few things you’re good at, which is often the boost we need to keep going. But if we only ever play to our strengths we never really push ourselves further.
Playing to our strengths while we work on our weaknesses means we’re doing both the stuff we know we’ll succeed at, plus the stuff that we feel unsure about. Sometimes that means we stumble, or badge something with a ‘fail’ sign, but failure isn’t always a bad thing. Making mistakes is how we learn, how we develop and how we grow our capabilities.
We have to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones if we really want to develop as humans. By pushing ourselves and working on our weaknesses while still getting good vibes from our strengths we set up a kind of self-reward system for ourselves. Any negative feelings we harbour for the failures and mishaps along the way can be acknowledged and then offset by more positive feelings from the little wins along the way.
By running both in parallel we maintain a sense of balance; we’re simultaneously rewarded and extended. And by working on our weaknesses in a more deliberate way, eventually we can convert them into strengths too. We become stronger and more resilient as humans, and we get better at this whole sustainable living thing in the process.
